Hi all! I just registered as a newbe and I am getting ready to get back in the saddle. I'm in the process of upgrading my Atala bought in 1972! Read my intro for more info. I removed my old Stronglight Chainwheel from my old Atala and bought the Shimano Ultegra 6500 bottom bracket and chainwheel. I must have lost the instructions (if any). Anyway, the bb went in fine with the right tool but before I tighten up the allen screws on the crank, do I just use the allen screws to seat the cranks onto the splined shaft or should I "set" the splines into each other with a rubber mallet? Kindof wierd set up, since I am use to 17mm bolts and square shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Tony

The crank arms should slide onto the spindle splines and seat themselves without any force. BE SURE the splines on the bottom bracket spindle and the splines on the crank arms mate properly before threading in the retaining bolts.

The collars with the two pin holes on each crank arm are part of the auto-extractor system. You can remove them with a pin spanner before installing the crank to get a better view of the splines to be sure they are lined up correctly.

Grease the spindle splines, the auto-extractor collar threads and the retaining bolt threads and heads before assembling the crank. Once eveything is lined up and seated, install the retaining bolts and torque them down to spec. (305 - 435 inch-pounds). Then thread in the auto-extracting collars.

Did I mention being sure the splines on the spindle and those on the crank arms mate properly?
