Commuting - Need a new seat

I commute to work everday, about 15km roundtrip, and ride everywhere else in between. The problem, to be blunt, is that my saddle is a tad uncomfortable. I have a cannondale stock seat now and it sucks. I've tried tires from 1.0 to 2.0 and my arse is still sore. What is a good saddle for a fellow who may want to reproduce in the future.

Well, it depends on where you store your bike during your commutes. Of course I would always recommend Brooks leather saddles but from what I understand Toronto has a problem with bike theft. I would be afraid that a dishonest person who is familar with Brooks would steal it from your bike unless you can loop a cable around the seat rails!

Having it stolen shouldn't be a problem. I lock the bike under security cameras and everything is recorded. No qr on the seatpost either. I've heard about brooks saddles. Are they really that good? It seems hard to believe that a leather seat is better than a loveseat soft one.

Wanting to see what all the fuss was about, I bought a B17 and it was love at first sit! I heard about having to "break them in" to be comfortable but mine was just fine right out of the box. Yes, they're expensive, but they will always hold thier value for years to come if it is well taken care of and I can probably sell my saddle for at least what I paid for it!

Forget those gel thingies! They may be okay for short distances but a bicycle is not a Buick LeSabre. They have to be pedaled to make them go and I think alot of newbie and occasional cyclists seem to forget that when choosing a saddle!

I went thru a lot of saddles Before I found one that worked for me. Then I found the Selle Italia Transam. Narrower in the front and wider in the back then the other saddles I have tried. I love it! I almost tried a Brooks, but found the Transam first. Maybe for my next Saddle I'll Try the B-17.

which Cannondale do you have? How much do you weigh? Can you give us an idea of what your riding position is like. The more bent over you are, generally the narrower you want a saddle to be. If you decide to get a Brooks, try and find a place that sells a lot and will take it back if it doesn't work out. The saddles recommended are excellent. I have a Selle Italia Trans AM XLP on my Airborne and I really like the funky little shock absorbers.
I had a B17 in an earlier life, and have been trying unsuccessfully to get another one (Don't ask, I think I am working off some bad karma). If you are a fast roadie, you might look at saddles like the Brooks Pro. There are several skinny saddles that people seem to like, but I can't help much there. With any saddle, give your butt some time to get used to it. Do a couple short rides, especially if it's a Brooks.

I have the 2003 c-dale badboy. It has a nice seat, just doesn't fit my better side overly well. I weigh about 200. I ride quite bent over and flipped my stem to get more extension. Part of my problem is I like to go fast and use a set of 1.0 top slicks@100psi. Tends to make little bumps into big bumps. I am going to get a set of tom slicks to replace these this year, had them before and loved them, will probably help smooth the ride out a little. I commuted from the middle of March when i bought the bike to the end of December, and the saddle doesn't need any more time to be broken in. Either way a slightly sore arse is way better than riding the bus and watching someone chow down on Taca Bell.
