Make sure you can actually ride that distance? How many miles do you usually ride?

i know i can ride that distance. however, i want to be able to get the fastest time. i read in cyclingforums.com that short-distance sprinting is the best way to "build the engine." i used to think that riding 52 miles would be the best workout, but on cyclingforums.com, the said its just "sadle stamina." any advice please, thanks
