Great Lakes - 2008 Psimet Invitational - Sept 20 - Come ride with us!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. WHAT: Open invitation to the third annual Psimet Invitational - a ride for BF members (and lurkers)
WHEN: September 20, 2008. 8:00am, 10:45am, 1:15pm depending on your route.
WHERE: The location of the start of the ride will be the Hampshire Forest Preserve.
Map Showing Hampshire Forest Preserve (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Hampshire+Forest+Preserve,+Hampshire,+IL&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=13&ll=42.103699,-88.528519&spn=0.077818,0.158272&iwloc=A)
FORMAT: This ride will have a Century (100 mile) route, a Metric Century (62 mile) route, and a Half-Metric Century (31 mile) route.
The Century riders will start first at 8:00am. They will ride a 38 mile route ending back at the starting point. The Metric Century riders should be at the starting point, ready to leave with the Century riders at 11:00 am. This larger group will then ride the second leg (31 miles) and end up back at the start point. This group will then meet up with the Half-Metric riders for the final leg (31 miles).
This routing option affords a lot of opprtunites for riders to choose and create their own routes. It also provides a chance for people from farther away to get there later and still be able to ride a metric or half-metric with everyone.
Also keep in mind the later you start the more miles everyone else will have in their legs. ;)
This year I will try a different riding format. We will attempt to do a A and B group. For the B group ONLY there will be a No-Drop rule(could effect start times of second and third leg, but probably won’t – just be flexible).
You guys know who the A group will be. B group will be for anyone else who wants to come out and give it a shot. Most of the B group riders will most likely be riding in the 15-16ish mph range (total guess/estimate on my part). I AM LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO RIDE SWEEP IN THE B GROUP. IF YOU VOLUNTEER THEN YOU CAN'T JUST GO OFF RIDING WITH THE A's. I will be floating the whole route as needed.
Only moral support is provided. You must provide your own fluid/food for the ride. There are optional stops (convenience stores) on the first 2 legs. The idea is that you bring your own and leave it in your car. Each time we return to the car you will then stock up for the next 30-mile ride.
Cue-sheets and maps will be provided. No road markings (maybe some last minute ones this year), but some of us know the route pretty well.
Currently we have no mechanical SAG support. If someone could bring a spouse or friend to help fill that role – it would be great!
WHY: This is meant as a social ride. It is an opportunity for Bike Forums members to get together and meet, and ride together in a group. It is also meant as an opportunity for riders to challenge themselves in a “safe environment”. If you have never ridden a century (Imperial, Metric, or even Half-Metric) before you will be surrounded by a lot of riders that have that can lend you support.
Feel free to bring non-BF riders as well, but remember this is not an “organized event”. This is simply a large group ride.
Please feel free to post any questions that you might have, and please spread the word to anyone else you think might be interested.

I love seeing new faces out there. Spread this to your group rides and invite one and all.

If you use a Garmin you can download these routes from the site and load them as courses on your Garmin to help.
I was thinking about not doing it this year, but it's just too much freeking fun at the end of a long year to not do it. Let's have some fun...and hear some chatter.

i only have my motionbased data, which doesn't seem to show the actual time of the stops. i also only did the 100k route. let me know if you still want it.

I'm thinking this would be a great opportunity for my g/f to do her first group ride via the 31 mile route. If not, i may have to finally knock off my first century.
This is all assuming the stagnation of my life continue and crap doesn't come up as it usually does. I'll hold off on the shoe requests for now...
^^^^ in other words, you aint coming. :) later.

Update : I can attend, willing to ride sweep.
Been off the bike for 3 weeks following a roadracing (motorcycle) crash - got my bell rung, trip to hospital with lights and siren.

Just make sure that she understands that if she does anything even remotely wrong or even dresses the wrong way we WILL yell at her...
...then when you stop laughing try to explain to her what it's really like.
I won't lie....there will be some sharks in the water this time, but I am hoping to have the B group stable enough to still make it fun for everyone.

My experience with Mrs. JT1 last year. :D
"Ok, here is JT1's perspective.
First mistake. Believe what I read on the forums.
Lots of different people coming. There is more than one "girl" that could possibly be there. I'll never have a final count because there are always people that lurk on here and then show up the day of without any notcie (perfectly allright).
As for the speed...read the description of the ride on the thread. It is designed so that riders of all sorts of skill levels can participate. Contrary to popular internet bravado we do NOT ride at 22mph (for long ), but really average about 15-20 for most rides depending on the conditions.
Besides it is no-drop and ther will be sweeps for each loop.
Second mistake. Use that information to encourage Mrs. JT1 to ride.
The look I received from Mrs. JT1 at 7:30 am (she was surrounded by a bunch of guys in spandex who looked fast standing still) was colder than the brisk chill in the air! She decided to skip the first loop and wander the wonderful town of Huntley instead and check back for the next loop.
Third mistake. Feeling sorry for Psimet2001 after the first climb, and stay far enough back from the lead group to keep him in sight. Riding with the group at 25 mph was much easier than facing that wind alone.
Fourth mistake. Changing my seat, and drastically changing my riding position the day before the ride. I'm not sure if it was the new riding position or the fact that this was my fourth century in the last six weeks, but my body felt like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz.
Fifth mistake. Making eye contact with Mrs. JT1 while eating one of those fantastic cookies Psimet2001's wife so graciously baked. Mrs. JT1 was in the middle of a detox diet, and cookies were a no no for her. Even though the outside temperature was much warmer, the chill in the air returned. Once she heard that shider's wife was going to join for the last lap, she almost smiled.
First smart decision. Send Mrs. JT1 shopping while I ride the second loop.
Second smart decision. Fuel up with a protein drink and those wonderful peanut butter triscuits, as opposed to cheese whiz.
Sixth mistake. Not having my ipod on when I stopped to see how Mrs. JT1 was doing on the third loop.
I don't know what was worse her crying, puking of yelling. I reassured her she was not going to die, and I would safely escort her back to the car at her pace. I'm not sure if it was too much shopping, too much Starbucks, her detox diet, or simply because I ate a cookie and she didn't, but she was not having fun. It was now 80 degrees outside but you would not know it because that chill in the air that I began to know so well returned. Those 8 miles back to the car were the longest miles I ever rode in my life.
About Mrs. JT1. New to road cycling, but has been trail riding for a couple years, and can climb a hill faster than most of my riding friends. A few weeks ago at the Harmon Hundred she completed 50 miles with a 16.1 mph average, riding solo. So I thought she was quite capable of riding at least one loop. I later learned she was trying to keep keep up with lead group, and was pulling the whole time for the last group. She did not know to pull off, and let someone else take the lead.
Other than my chilling ride back to the car, the ride was a lot of fun. I enjoyed meeting some new riders, and riding with some that I met before.I am quite competitive so I am inspired to put recursive in his place next year. One of the reasons he was so fast was the fact that he was the only one other than myself to eat those delicious peanut butter triscuits.
Thanks to Pismet2001 for all the effort in putting this ride together.
Anyone interested in The Hilly Hundred? I want to go, but I think I will leave Mrs.JT1 at home."
I thought this ride was going to be the 27th? I have to coach my kids first hockey practice at 10:20 on the 20th. This is not good!!!

HCIS!
woo hoo
Although I may only have enough time for one loop :(
I will also be acting as the official BFNIC bookie this year.
6-1 on timmy showing and 2-3 he has a lame excuse.
12-1 I get caught in no-man's land between the As and Bs and limp in 10 minutes after everyone else.
2-1 Psimet gets Queen of the Rollers for the A group
and 200-1 that recursive does not eat cheese. I'll take any other action too.

I've been climbing better, but I'd have to say you're probably right on.
I'd say it's more like 40-1 on timmy showing. He's like ryanf...except ryanf shows up for rides. ;)
I am starting to get excited FWIW. No word from recursive. No posts on his blog or anything. Does anyone know if he is still OK?? His last post was 8/21. Just burnout I hope.
Trying to think of boobie prizes...
As for the lack of chatter I think it's because many people are under the impression that we are all going to ride like pro speed monsters - even though we will have a B group - and will not spend much time hanging around....this is not (entirely) true.
Show up...have fun. It's that simple.

Ha!!!
I am middle-aged, overweight and will be riding an 8-speed. Yes, that means 8 speeds total, 4 in back and 2 in front, RD on the downtube and the FD is at my feet. So, are the weenies out there afraid of of my speed?
Ha!!

No chance...his bike has negative drag. We stand no chance.

I'm thinking of doing this ride also. Haven't registered yet but I know the area well. Did a trail series there last year (running) and kept thinking how great it would be to ride there. Are you signed up?
