Mountain Biking - Giant or Schwinn?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am trying to choose between two older mountain bikes to use as my winter commuter.
Because the road salt eats up bikes, I use older bikes rather than newer, more expensive machines.
I have two bikes to chose from, both are mid 1990's bikes.
One is a Giant Rincon.
The other is a Schwinn with no markings to tell what model it is. Sorry I don't have any better details.
GENERALLY SPEAKING, would you choose a 1990's Schwinn or a 1990's Giant?

Ride the giant in the snow, giants suck anyway :)
Yeah, the Rincon isn't anything special. It is one Giant's lowend bikes, and if it is early 90's then it is really nothing special.

Pick whichever one fits you best and seems to have the best components on it. Sounds like they are pretty equal in most respects. Maybe try to look at which one has had the best care and maintenance, and pick that one.

If they are both beaters then the above advice would make the most sense. Take the one that works the best...
I gave the Schwinn another gander. It was repainted - probably kiked somewhere along the way, but I am the only thing that stands between it and the dump now.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of bike it is.
Did Schwinn make a bike called a Sierra?

Hey Mike...yeah schwinn made the Sierra a few years back. I believe it was supposed to something in between a mountain bike and a comfort bike.

THAT'S IT!! Ya, that sounds exactly like what I saw. It looks like what is being marketed today as a street bike or a cross bike. It has a kind of mixed geometry with, I'm guessing 26 X 1.5" (?) wide tires.
Do you know anything about it? Was it a reasonably good machine?
Thanks, Joe.
