I want to take clothes to and from work, do some one day type tours, etc. I don't really want to add panniers, but am interested in a trunk or duffel for the rear rack. Is this a good choice? Will it hold a change of clothes? Is the duffel just as good as a trunk, etc? Thanks for your advice.

Rack trunks come in various sizes and with various numbers of compartments and pockets. I used an expanding rack trunk for commuting for quite sometime. I left a week's worth of clothes in a closet in my office, and carried only what I needed: a pair of socks, papers, what have you.
I did a couple of overnight trips using just the rack trunk, as well. It would hold a change of clothes and some toiletries, plus some tools and snacks.
Consider that you can attach a few more items to the outside of a rack trunk using bungee cords. I have carried a pair of shoes that way.
If you are truly a minimalist, you can get by with a rack trunk. If you need a little more storage capacity, add a handlebar bag.
I've never used a duffel, so I can't comment on that.
