I escaped the family for a few hours Monday and road from Maynard to Fitchburg and back again. I took route 117 west, past 495, past, 190, then hit route 12 and went North until I saw the sign for Fitchburg. There was a convenience store where I bought a snickers bar and a big gatoraide. I called my daughter so they would know where the heck I wound up. I stopped at a McDonalds and got a couple of chicken wraps and a small soda, yes a soda ...

Going out I had a couple of granola bars, raisins and water.

The ride back was better because the wind was at my back and the hills seemed to be more in my favor. Climbing the last hill I was very impressed with myself and I felt strong. I wish I had a modern bike instead of this old '70s era 10-speed, but it's holding up. Looking forward to better shifting. So I'm shopping and it may take a year or so to find something.

I guess if one wants a long ride, one has to ride on the road. This ride was 49 miles RT.

Anybody else ever do this trip?

Well I've actually ridden it the other way, due to the fact that I live closer to Fitchburg than Maynard. Rt. 117 is not my favorite road though, as many sections are quite narrow with little or no shoulder to ride on. The section between I-190 and 495 gets a lot of commuter traffic during the week, and the Bolton Flats section near Culley's snowmobile ranch by the railroad track crossing is a notoriously bad stretch. Sounds like you had a fun ride...if you do it on the weekend, the traffic volume is usually quite a bit reduced. :thumb:

Hi Suzie,

Yes it was on a weekend, so that traffic wasn't bad. But 1 van did come close to taking me out. For some reason they were just riding in that part of the lane. The flag I use for commuting would have helped I'm convinced.

Reg: 117 I used that for commuting East from Maynard to West Newton & Brighton 17 or 22 miles. There are definitely some "kill zones".

Stay safe! :-)

Route 2? Huh? That runs East/West. Don't you mean Route 1? Wow NYC to Boston & back in 1 weekend? Thats like 400 miles! That would be cool though.

Probably means 2-A since Route 2 is a divided limited access highway and bicycles are not allowed on it until you go farther west where it joins 2-A in the town of Erving.
