Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. The 70's. Hard to explain why. Of course, There seemed to be a lot more people bike riding back then. Or, maybe it's just because miniskirts and hot pants were popular. :D Of course, they are today as well. :D:D
Don't know, maybe it's just the "It was a more simple time" bit. It could just be because I'm from the generation that believed that by now, we would have flying cars, and big bases on the moon. The future looked bright and promising. And today? I'm not sure what to think. I keep expecting to wake up and find the world resembles the sets from "Blade Runner".

The 50's - baby!
Life was simple, everyone knew right and wrong and pretty much did that, you could leave your keys in the car and your house unlocked, and we only had about 150 million folks in the US of A - much less strain on resources.
The "war" was over, the police action in Korea was a bit of a stutter, and hiding under the desk for when the A Bomb was going to blast you away was disconcerting. Segregation was yet to be recognized by the general population, and possible solutions were far in the future.
Still, all-in-all, it was generally a better time.
As a former Historic Interpreter, I was trying to find the 1840's on the list. But noooooo.:50:

For me it was the 1970s, although all of them have had their moments.
I spent nearly all of the 70s in high school and college, and those were both great times. I remember getting up each morning looking forward to what I was going to do that day (well, except on those days when I had a test in German language class).
I have a hard time grasping that it has now been 30 years since my last day in college. It doesn't seem like nearly that long. However I'm sure that perception is influenced by the fact that I have rarely ever been away from college since 1973. I just love college campuses & college towns.

It's actually 1965 to 1975. The early 60's were just more 50s and the late 70s lame.

1970s. Having to look down to see who was ****ing my ****. Group ***. Skinnydipping. Long long long bike rides (bikecentennial etc.). Trips to Europe. 531 plus Nuovo Record plus tubulars plus Alps. Leather. Vittoria. Vino at lunch. The riders who didn't speak English but let me sit in anyway. Hitting cobblestones at too too fast. Thin air and glaciers. The girl with the blond braids. Blue dusk and the Matterhorn.

Ditto to ccorlew. The late 70s really were lame! All the best music was in the late 60s/early 70s. And I did most of my bicycling (to date, anyway) in the early 70s!

There are bound to be many cross/partial decade favorites. So pick the one which had the better half-decade.

I voted 2010s not because of what the past was, only because it has already happened. I look forward to what the future holds (retirement, grandkids, who knows?) and hope my favorite decade will always be the one ahead, not behind.

For me this is it!
My relationship with my wife is better than it's ever been. Our financial picture is better than it's ever been. Our kids are all grown and making their own way. They make me very proud. What's not to like?

I'll go with curtis on the 60's/70's split. I'd have to vote 60's by your rules. Who'd you learn to make polls from..............the Fox?
I went with the 80's. The music and clothes were so happy and goofy. And all that yummy new technology!

I can see it now. A poll with 100 choices, some of them being
- Decade of 1962-1971
- Decade of 1963-1972
- Decade of 1964-1973
- Decade of 1965-1974
etc.

The 70's were pretty darned good. We met, fell in love, and married
during the 70's. 10/10/75 married. Down side, I was probably drunk
close to 25% of the time. In retrospect we could have had a lot
more fun if we partied a lot less.
The 80's were tough. Strong, good marriage got us through the
first five years of that dacade. We suffered a couple tragedies that
break up weak relationships...none of it anyones fault. The second half
got better family wise, but the Company(my income) began its long
slow decline. If only I had realized what was happening....
The 90's were terrible. The bride was diagnosed with M.S. and her
health was slipping the entire decade. The Company was nose diving.
The 00's were much better. She got onto an expensive, insurance paid
medicine that works. Kids all thrived both socially and scholasticly.
One daughter had an almost fatal episode with Crohn's but has been doing well
since. However, The Company is in terrible shape, insurance is horrific, wifes health
is in severe jeapordy.
I voted for the 10's....'cause it's gotta get easier sometime. Our relationship
just seems to get stronger day by day, so things are going to be just fine,
regardless of what happens.
Hmmmmmm....maybe I'm just starting to grow up.
O.K. That's it. I vote for the 10's because I'm finally mature enough
to appreciate all that I've got, and all that I've experienced. Man, the
next decade is gonna be just awesome.

The only thing I had to worry about was riding my bike, swimming and softball games.
If I could split my vote I would add 2010. I'm entering into retirement and planning to enjoy this period of my life just as much or more than previous periods:thumb:

I chose the 80s. But, my favorite ten year period would have to be '75 thru '85. Lots of fond and fun memories in that period.
Mid 60's to mid 70's. I think its natural to pick the era that we grew up in - which means roughly the 16-25 year old range.

I voted 50's but could carry it through the first couple years of the 60's, before the craziness set in. We were a different country then but things got violent fast as we assassinated our leaders, blundered into Vietnam, then walked away and did nothing to stop the genocide in Cambodia. Don

As many have hinted at, when people think of "The Sixties" they are really thinking of, roughly, '67-'75, or so. That's the zone for me, as well, but if I consider the standard delineation of a decade, I'd still go for the '60s. That's when I became fully musically aware and began to become aware of the bigger world. And, that was the time of Mercury, Gemini, and early Apollo :D

The '70's without a doubt. Someone said if you can remember the 1970's you weren't there, and there were certainly several years that I was more often drunk than sober. I'm probably the only person who flunked a college PE class but I discovered girls......ok I was a JERK.....but life was soooooo simple back then compared to now.
The 1980's was when I entered the work force and got to do some nifty things and met even more girls. Got to meet President Reagan and Jimmy Carter and Bush (the Elder), and several world leaders and had my first of many helicopter rides hanging out the side from a 'monkey harness' sans door.
The 1990's was all about work.....too much so to be honest.
Now I am 57 and struggling financially and looking for another job. Yesterday I had a cortisone shot in each knee so maybe that will prompt me to work on getting that other job.
The bottom line for me is every day you wake up on the right side of the grass you have the chance to have a great day. Off to ride, to see how the knees feel.
Love to read all the perspectives of those of us with a bit of experience behind in the bag.

How about just listing your 120 favorite months?

2000's because I am having fun now. Riding the TransAmerica with my daughter and another great young woman (one of her college room mates) last year really helped.
I have good memories from all of the decades mentioned though.
For me, the 2000's...because I divorced The Angry One.
Since then, I've started cycling a lot more (for recreation, transportation, and competition).
And I've been dating nothing but athletic hard-bodied women (and compared to my married days, my sex life has improved 1000%).

I keep expecting to wake up and find the world resembles the sets from "Blade Runner".
I had to laugh a couple of weeks ago when I was in downtown Los Angeles I laughed in shock when I saw the giant outdoor video advertising screens in front of the Nokia Theater. They're getting there. It won't be long.
The decades seem a wash. But what I liked?
The Space Race of the '60s, Space Activism movement of the '80s. Hippies, Hard Rock, Acid Rock, Bluegrass, the Grateful Dead. 60's sports cars. Pre-68 VW vans. Late 70's Japanese 4-cylinder motorcycles. The rise of 10 speeds, bmx, mountain bikes, recumbents, triple cranks and decent brakes.

The 80's or now. I dont really remember the 70's (I wasnt too young to remember). The 80's were a wild time but unfortuantely I grew up during that time. In 90's I was 30 something and got my now wife pregnant. Wnet to college, started a career and have spent the last 15 years raising my kids and developing my career. 80's and before were a party, 90's and after were too. Oh well, fourtunately it has all been good. I jsut realized this is the 50+ thread, I am only 48, is that ok?

Never owned or even drove one. Would have liked to do that though. A much maligned car suffering from the same "design flaws" as the often overlooked Porsche 911/914. If you had listened to Ralph Nader, you would have been convinced that rear engined cars were "Unsafe at any speed".
Ralph never drove!

IMHO, there is nothing, NOTHING, like being young, single, with a good job, a new Corvette, my first road bike, in the free love early 1970's. I was old enough to know the score and young enough to do something about it.
As if to put a cherry on top of a great desert, I ended that decade by proposing to my wife.
Live was good!
