Hi, folks,
I discovered the site a couple of weeks ago when I began thinking about acquiring a bike. I'm a grad student, and I'd like to start commuting at least part of the way to campus (I live quite far, so it wouldn't be feasible to do the whole thing by bike -- or at least not yet).
I haven't had a bike in a long time -- since I was 20 and in college, when, after saving up all summer, I bought a beautiful new mountain bike only to have all its stealable parts taken and the rest of it (the part held by the U lock) brutalized. That sort of traumatized me into not even looking at a bike until recently. Honestly: to the point that I don't remember what the make of the bike was. Just that it was black and much too much bike given my ignorance of biking beyond putting my feet on the pedals. Never mind my naivete about bike security on college campuses.
Now I'm going for a much cheaper model (KHS Green) which I'll be picking up today or tomorrow. Frankly, I'm happier with this decision, because now it's more about the actual biking than about having an intimidating and paranoia-inducing "machine." My aim is mainly to get around by bike more than I do by car. Oh, and I do have an until-now secret wish to learn how to build a bike myself, but that's for later.
I guess that's it. I've been getting a lot from the postings here and look forward to learning some more.
