I started riding today. I have not ridden in some time now, i decided that since i was waking up at the appropriate hour, that biking would be the best thing for my health. i've gone a total of 3 one mile trips and after the 2nd trip and very much on the 3rd one, my butt started to get rather irritated. I thought I might need to see my gastro doctor for this, unless anyone can give me suggestions on how to deal with that. its definitely rectal pain. I had considered taking a warm bath (not shower) after my 3rd ride but then i wondered how many times I'd be tempted to do that later on the day, knowing that i'd go back a few more times. any ideas on how to prevent this from happening? I did not get this pain back some months ago when i used to ride, the only difference is, i adjusted my seat so that it would not swish from side to side, that way i did not have to adjust for its turning once i got on it. should i leave it swishing a little bit? anything else?

Sounds like you're putting too much pressure on soft tissue. 3 ways to deal with this:

Padded Cycling Shorts
Saddle Tilt (Should be either flat or VERY slightly nose up)
Saddle width.

Lets start with the first. Padded shorts are your best friend!

check your saddle and make sure it isn't nose down, and make sure it's wide enough for your sit bones bu t not so wide it interferes with circulation to the legs. A Specialized dealer has what's called an Ass-O-Meter, to measure where the Ischial bones are (Part of your pelvis that you sit in), and can help you select an appropriate width of saddle.

It's probably what you're wearing on your butt rather than the saddle. Most pants and underwear have seams that chafe when you're riding -- that's why people wear bike shorts.
