Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Am going to be in Boston on Monday, 2/23, and have about 4 hrs to kill. Any bike shops near South Station within walking distance or anything near one of the 'T' lines? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Cambridge. While it has a bike shop, it's basically a neat place. The Harvard Coop has an amazing book selection (lots of book shops in the area), there are several really good restaurants (For good and inexpensive try Mrs B's...for Mex try the Border Cafe). If you like tea, go to Tea luxe across the street from the coop. There's shops for about anything you can think of. Only place in New England I know of where I could go buy a nice Go board. Try the used clothing stores and pick up a merino sweater for a cheap but effective cycling jersey.
Harris Cyclery is only a few miles away, right off the Mass Pike...although I don't know if it's on the T or not. Call them...

there's boston bicycles on beacon street off the C line, i'm pretty sure it's the first above-ground stop out there. and cambridge bikes off of the red line by central square, just get off there and walk back toward the charles river on mass. ave. international bikes is off the green "B" line...get off at packard's corner and walk up brighton ave a few blocks...
there's a bunch more, but you would probably only be able to make it to one of those three in the time you have. the T in boston pretty much sucks eggs. Harris Cyclery is not T accessible.
if you like high-end road stuff and snotty as hell employees, international is the place to go. cambridge has a lot of nice stuff, a lot of classy italian frames and a bunch of pretty nice used frames as well. they're by far my favorite shop in the boston area. friendly people, good selection, decent location...they have a lot of track stuff too.
bikes not bombs is a really cool place, but their hours are limited now as they are a non-profit. they have pretty much all used parts and bike that have been donated. they have some pretty choice stuff though. my friend just picked up a pretty nice bianchi road bike with shimano 600, i believe. it's off the orange line by jackson square. it's kind of a sketchy area, and i can't remember the name of the major street that's right there...columbus or something...walk down the hill that's right there to the major street then turn right and walk up to amory, turn right and follow amory along and it's right there...they have a big sign, and a bike hanging off the wall outside the door.
obviously there are a bunch more shops, and each is good in it's own way, but they're not all T accessible, and a bunch aren't really worth the time and effort to go to...my best friend's shop is in JP...it's called Ferris Wheels...but you have to take the E line and then the 39 bus to get there...
broadway bike school is in cambridge as well...if you get off the red line at kendall/MIT and find your way to broadway and walk up about 7 or 8 blocks you'll get there....they do a lot of used bikes as well as being a distributor for ANT bikes...and they have a pretty good mechanic program...last time i was there all the people working were female. the place just plain rules.
oh, the closest shop to south station is probably community bikes. but it's a hard to explain how to get there unless you know the south end. you have to cross "the nexus of the universe" to get there (place where tremont st. and tremont st. intersect). they have a lot of rims...like every mavic rim ever in stock. and specialized and bianchis. and KHSes i think too. they're nothing too special. they're on what should be charles street if you follow it from where the garden and the common are separated, but it veers to the right and ends up not being charles anymore. the south end is confusing as hell...as is the north end...and the financial district...and most everywhere else in that city....streets are based on old cowpaths, y'know...

If you can get the time, International Bike is the best high end shop in Boston. Yes, the staff are a bit snooty, but I usually don't interact with them anyway.
LOT's of very nice bikes to drool over!

Don't know if you're going to get this in time, but Garage de Velo just opened up about 2 months ago, and it's right next to South Station (actually, i think its across the street on Atlantic Ave). Its small and smokey, but definitely worth a look.
