Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Fenix L2D question

i just came back from a ride . first time that the batteries went low to the point i didn't have turbo mode anymore. So when i arrived home i took the lights out of the bike and tried to turn them off. and i notice i have a difficulty to do so . the Button in the rear seems like is not flat any more. it's round like it has air in it.
then i look at the other light , SAME thing. When i opened the light i heard gas/air release .
i'm using NiMa energizers. is it possible the batteries released some gas ? very weird.

Yeah. Maybe go get some better batteries. From what I've heard, Energizer's NiMH lineup isn't that great.

I"ve never had such problems with my L2d and Energizer NiMH (any of my 6).

I just pushed the button flat and that was that.
My guess is there develops some heat inside with any battery brand. Perhaps
a chemical reaction, maybe from the bulb, etc.

I have several Battery brands, Sanyo, Duracell, Evnergizer, Eneloop.
I love the Eneloop best because I do not have to worry about make sure I rotate my batteries when I go in the draw.
I ride 90-120 minutes and never go to a low power if the batteries were just put in (any brand). If it does go low, I pull over swap em and continue. I always carry Eneloops as my spares

Sounds like a case of over-discharge (or maybe repeated over-discharge).

i don't think it's over discharge . i measured the voltage one pack had 1.2v other 1.1v.
those batteries are almost new. i used them about 3 times...

yes some batteries have gas buildup, there are even extreme examples when they have blown up.. The energizers are a name brand but the overall runtime isn't great.. I have had great luck with Titanium 2700 and Duracell 2650's..

Wow, that seems odd. I mean, it seems obvious that the batteries are venting for some reason, but the question becomes "why?"

What about your charging habits with these? Quick charge, slow charge, perhaps any chance of overcharging of batteries that were already at near capacity? What about the charger type that you're using? I dunno, any of those things might offer a clue. But it does seem really odd for this to be happening with such relatively new batteries. I wonder if this could be happening if you just got a bad set of batteries?

i charge slow as much as i can. you probably don't remember but i'm the guy with that "monster "charger
the Schulze isl6-330 that can charge 30 cells with two ports.
Anyhow this charger can charge very slow or very fast and has peek detection. i always choose slow if possible.,

only the first time that i charge them at 250mA for unknown reason it didn't peek. so it was over charging them till i stopped it. but i doubt that damaged them because those cheap chargers do that on regular basis on EVERY charge.

i had Duracells in the past and didn't get much life of them . used them in my digi camera.

my next cells will be probably Sanyo's

There's just been so much talk of chargers and batteries in so many different threads lately that I'm having a hard time remembering who said what in which thread and when or why it was said. ;)

And yeah...to me it seems really odd that this could be happening at all on new batteries, especially with your knowledge of charging. I'm stumped, unless (again) you might somehow have gotten a bad set of batteries from the start.

well those energizer cells are still OK. the reason that they where low after over an hour ride is
probably because i played with the L2Ds a bit that day before the ride :). but that venting. yes very odd.
i will see on the next ride what's going on. if i get less life from them and if that venting returns. i will keep you posted :)

regarding the L2Ds , i'm very happy with them.
