I have been getting a popping noise of the front end of my Trek 8000. Checked spoke tension, seems okay, did this by feel, as I do not have a tension meter.

Lubricated all the areas where spokes cross.

Repacked wheel bearings and headset and made sure all that is adjusted well.

Noise is still there.

Took the front wheel off and placed the area with the "click" on the garage floor. By placing my weight on the wheel, I can reacreate the click.

Squeezed the tire in that area, and I can reacreate the click. Sounds like the bead is making a noise. The tire appears to be fully seated, has hundreds of miles on it, does not run out of true, bump, etc. that I can tell.

Has anyone here ever had this situation before? Any ideas of what to look at? Tear/damage to tire bead? Damage to hook on rim?

Is the rim welded or pinned? Is it happening at the weld? Run your fingers along the inside of the bead and feel for any seperation in the rim bed and sidewall. Pinch the rim sidewalls together at that point and see if you get any movement. Look for cracks at the spoke nipple holes in that area. If you find any of these problems I'd say the wheel is dead. If not, ride it but listen and look for any worsening of the condition.

It is the stock rim (Matrix Single Track Pro with Deore hub)that came on the bike in 1992. Have looked for damage to eyelets around nipples, cracks, etc. Found none. It is a seamed rim with pins it appears and the noise is near the joint. Will take the tire off and give that area a good examination.

Could be a crack in the rim? Are the sides worn out from the brake-pads?

Pulled the tire and tube last night and went over the rim really carefully. The sides do not show real obvious wear. No deep grooving or pitting on the braking surfaces.

Here is a pic of the seam. The small dark mark on the shoulder, above the braking surface to the right of the seam is the scratch/crack, not sure which

I did find what is either appears to be a scratch but what may be a crack near the pinned seam. It is circled in red here and is hard to make out, shows a shiny line moving diagonally up to the right in this pic.

Gave the rim and tire a very good wipe down and put it all back together. Went over the wheel again looking for loose spokes and did not find any.

Going to take it by the bike shop this weekend and let their wheel expert look at the scratch/crack area near the seam.

Thanks for the input ya'll.
