Bicycle Mechanics - What size BB do I need to get a 42mm chainline with a Super Record Crank?

Hi Everyone,

So I have a Strada Super Record Crank. I would like to achieve a 42mm chainline with a single ring in the outside position. What size (width) BB do I need to achieve this? I would prefer a campy BB of similar vintage (to keep the bike all campy) but if necessary would look to adjustable BB's such as Miche (:rolleyes:really don't wanna go that route) or Phil.

Am I right in thinking that if I use a standard Campy Pista BB designed for the Pista version of my cranks, I will not get a correct 42mm chainline?

The most reliable way I know to line up that vintage of models and sizings is on the Cranksets page of the Bicycle Classics site http://www.bicycleclassics.com/, run by Greg Parker. He tries to stock a wide range of NOS classic Campy components. He sells Phil, too, but I haven't seen Miche at his site.

From his tables you'd find the standard chainline to be expected with a fully vintage gruppo. If the 42 mm chainline you want is not Campy's assumed value (I suspect their system is build around 43.3mm or 43.0 mm), you might not find exactly what you need, if it exists.

Second choice, for help in finding the best available compromise, for me would be Peter Chisolm at Vecchio's in Boulder, Co, probably one of the most authoritative Campy experts out there. One of his specialties is making odd mixings of components work right.
