No, wait, this is the 50 Plus forum. We're not supposed to tease other cyclists, we're too mature for that. Just tell him what a MUP is and then it will be "Why didn't I think of that?"

You guys would do this to a new poster................:(

It's a multi use path. They can be very useful and a lot of fun but they can also be your worst nightmare as they are littered with.......surprise......other users. Those users can be pedestrians, dogs, children (a much worse version of the pedestrian), horses and most dangerously, other people riding bicycles. MUP's require a modicum of civility and responsibility toward others. Usually there are stay to the right rules, a speed limit (which should be common sense among crowds but doesn't seem to be) and a responsibility for you to inform slower folk that you are going to pass them.

The largest conflicts exist because none of the users understands the requirements or desires of the other users and in most cases don't care. (wait.............that's life isn't it).

"CRAFT"
:roflmao2: Love that. Snort!

And, its true. MaddMaxx was right, the fun-poking was much more enjoyable. waldowales hint gave it away. Thanks, folks:)

And actually, where I've been riding is one of the horsey/bikey kind of MUPs, and as it is a single-track in the woods, visibility is quite low. I think I need to hang a bear bell from my bike to alert others I'm coming.

So, anyway, the next obvious question is, how do distinguish the difference between a paved MUP and a cinder/limestone or dirt MUP?

I get torn between not wanting to hit them and not wanting to give them a heart attack when I ring my bell. And when I yell out "On your left," it seems to confuse them so much that they turn around and stand in the left lane.

Aha. That is one of the unanswered questions. Everyone talks MUP without distinction. I will supply the provisional abbreviation MSMUP. (multi-surface multi-use-path).

I suspect you will get further with "paved MUP" or "unpaved MUP".....:p

By the time you get to trails in the woods, your getting reasonably far away from most folks definition of MUP's.

I didn't know what it MUP meant either. We have a paved MUP about 1 1/2 miles long, but the walkers will be walking toward you and will stay two abreast, and force you into the grass. It is a pain in the neck, so I stay on the road with the cars.

Oooohh, I know! Mount an little tinkly bell -- along with an air horn from a semi truck on your bike. If they don't yield to the tinkly bell...:D Of course the needed batteries to run that would probably add more weight than the surprised compliance would be worth. Oh well.

Instead, yell "passing."

Ever been a ped on a MUP and have someone yell "On Your Left?"

Even after years of bicycling on MUPS, I am still startled.

You are asking thier minds to process three things at once

1. What the heck was that? and
2. What the heck is left -
3. And, am I supposed to move there, or move away from there?

Good idea, which somehow never occurred to me.

I find that bikers know what "on your left" means but it frequently confuses pedestrians, who will often just turn around and stare at you while you approach them. I used to try "excuse me" but I think "passing" is better.

I use both "on your left" and "passing." Most people understand what I mean because the pathway here is well used by bikes and peds. I hate the apparent dyslexics who don't know their right from their left and step in front of me. To avoid collisions, I've learned to slow down on the MUP. If I want to go (relatively) fast, I ride the backroads. The hills kill my speed, but at least the bushes and trees don't step in front of me when I pass. Which saves wear and tear on the skin of my knees.

Actually, I haven't found that to be true - at least not all of the time.

Since I live close, I ride on the Katy trail a lot. My tiny and unobtrusive sounding Incredibell is about 50% effective. A "ting" or two and they look back and move over. I think that's pretty good.

For the other 50% I doubt anything that isn't over bearing and rude would work (I'd consider an Air Zound to be overbearing and rude on the Katy trail). For those I slow way down, talk to them and generally do whatever is necessary to pass them safely and courtiously.

Definitely not true around here.

This morning I rang the bell for 3 peds. Each time I got a "Thank you" from the peds as they moved over. What is really irritating to a ped is having that stealth bike overtake them without warning. Causes one to have a really bad startle reflex incident.

Our peds are, almost without exception, very well trained and courteous. I just don't have the complaints that you guys have, and I ride 95% of the time on the MUPS around here.

On our MUPs I prefer to say "Ding! ding! ding! ding! ding!" which almost always gets a prompt look and a smile. I think that "On your left" morphs into "Left!" and they don't know if they heard "left" or "heft" or "deaf" or what. But "Ding! ding! ding! ding! ding!" seems to register very well.

We could use some of that training around here. :)

A friend and I came up behind three elderly couples spread across the path a couple years ago and I kept ringing my little dinger type bell and they never moved. As I got up to them and was about to verbally announce my presence, I heard one of the ladies say "Isn't that little bell cute?" :twitchy:

Oh, you guys!!

MUP=Multi Use Path. Designed for cyclists, joggers, walkers, and suburban moms with kiddies riding Toys-R-Us bikes, MUPS are the things that really get the anti-facility crowd boiling mad. Some are well-planned, some are not. A few that were built back in the 70's, (they threw a few bones to the bicycle movement and ecology movements of the time) go from nowhere to nowhere.

Some of the oldest MUPS I know of are the Paul Dudley White bicycle paths around Boston's Charles River Basin. Dr. Paul Dudley White was the longtime boss of cardiology at the Mass General Hospital. He felt that cycling was one of the best exercises you could do your heart. His own bicycle still hangs in the Museum of Science. Or, at least it was still hanging there, last time I visited the place.

Perhaps the thing to do is, as you is to ride up right behind them, cover your face with your arms (as you would for an impending car crash) and scream in terror.

I'm not sure if this would teach them to pay attention or not, but it would be a hoot.
