Great Lakes - Rain+Chicago = Great Ride Yesterday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Had a great ride yesterday along Lake Michigan. We were getting the rain and wind left over from Gustav, and it was really refreshing. There were only about a dozen people out on the MUP by the lake. Ordinarily it's chaos with the walkers, bikers, roller bladers and everyone else. Bring on more rain!

Who are you crappin'?
I'm still drying out from my 13 mile commute.

Whole different ballgame when you're out for fun wearing dry-fit. If I was commuting, I'd be hailing a cab or braving the "L" instead of biking yesterday.

i specifically got my broken car working two nights ago so that i wouldn't have to ride in that rain. It started to feel like it wasn't going to stop for 40 days.

I skipped a group ride last night...well ...because I didn't have a snorkel.
If I ever settle on what the best choice is for footwear to keep my tootsies dry in rain I might buy it and join you out there.
RAIN is cool. rain sucks. later.

There is no such thing. Even wearing plastic baggies just creates a funnel. You can not ever keep your feet dry when riding in the rain. Accept it. Embrace the squish.
I just get sick of the squish after multiple hours of it. :twitchy::twitchy:

I agree. I have a showers pass elite jacket and showers pass pants and they are awesome. Their booties just slow down how long it takes to get soaked. Same with seal skin socks ... just delays the inevitable.

I rode Busse Woods yesterday in the hard rain looking for my daughter's first HS Cross Country meet. What I did not know was that they decieded it was too wet to run and postponted the meet!! They claimed the course was flooded. Not exactly...I did some cyclocross to get across open areas looking for the event and it was soggy but not flooded...not completely.
I saw one walker and one rider. The rider looked like a commuter cutting through. I added a windbreaker, helmet cover, bike hat and shoe covers to my normal kit. Yeah, shoe covers...at least they looked good. Was soaked but had a good ride.

Well, you might end up saving me some money then. If it's inevitable then I might have to just get used to it.
I've never really encountered significant rain during a ride up until last week when, returning home, I was forced to slog through about 20 miles of steady moderate showers. Although I was soaked from head to toe nothing really bothered me other than my Sidi shoes. They felt about five times as heavy and the squish kept my attention distracted away from anything else.
How about this - do you have any recommendations for footwear (socks, shoe covers) that are good for at least minimizing the problem? My shoes were getting a pretty thorough drenching at times from front tire spray. Maybe some decent covers would at least help ease that problem.
Thanks! :)

Thin socks that won't get heavy. Shoe covers help to keep lots of water from getting in the shoe but it will still be wet. My shoe has a small hole in the underside of the toe to let water out. I road with shoe covers and it did keep the big splashes from filling my shoes but my feet were soaked.

I don't mind riding in the rain if I get caught out in it, but I wont leave the house too often if it's already raining. (sew-ups + railroad tracks + rain = no friggin way, it dont matter what angle I take um at!) I commuted into work this morning and the foot bridge behind the PD was wet and full of leaves. needless to say I went pretty slow. I've seen a few go down, me too years ago.
