Touring - Recumbent Tour Travelogue

Here's a travelogue of my recumbent tour.
Am currently on West Coast ... Southern California.
Looking to meet up with bent or touring enthusiasts
for touring, local rides, or conversation.

Destination: San Diego, Tucson, possibly Mexico.
No time constraints ... very flexible.

The only thing that worries me about a recumbent is being seen by traffic. I mean, people have told me that drivers react more to things that are unusual, but they have to see them first. I'm not sure I'd enjoy the feeling of being a cockroach among the cattle.

I think i would tour ONLY on a recumbent., (LWB & USS) i dont see my self riding a recumbent to or from work, or within city traffic :)

Nice site, too bad about the jail time, that would suck!

I met a club of riders on recumbants in frount of a bike shop in columbia falls Mt. Got talkin to them and was offered the chance to ride one of their bikes. I hoped on and 2 people were holding me up and got me going once i got my balance they let go and i rode arround the parking lot for a few minutes.


I thought it was comfortable but I am not ready to make the switch yet. I saw
a few people touring on recumbants and they all have converted from traditional touring bikes and say they will never go back. IlLL drink to the recumbants

Chris, I know what you mean. I learned how important it is to be seen when I was smacked by a right hand car mirror in Oklahoma (the story is in my travelogue). My conclusion is that a big reflective orange construction flag can be seen equally as well on a bent as an upright. I think the bigger issue is that on an upright the rider can more easily see behind him/herself and that adds a greater level of safety. For me I found that time and experience helps, and a couple good rear view mirrors. -charles.
