Classic & Vintage - Schwinn Heavy Duty

I found a guy that has a Schwinn Heavy Duty thats in great shape but needs two tires and tubes. I don`t have any dates or numbers but I`m guessing a 60s bike and I haven`t owned a bike since I was a kid. What I was wanting was a bike to ride with my boys and this seems to be a nice bike that would be a comfortable ride also. Anyone have a comment on the Heavy Duty?

The Heavy Duti is, well heavy. ;) A very durable cantilever framed ballon tire bike. It's a great cruiser, simple, easy to repair, tough. For cruising around the neighborhood, it'll be fine. I think they were originally intended for industrial or institutional use, and seemed to come in safety yellow. I don't know when they started to make them.

I should have got more info. on the bike before coming here, sorry. The bike is black with white trim and has all the paint except a few minor scratches, crome fenders and Schwinn tires and handle grips. Is there a place the the serial no. can be found? Can the bike be dated from the serial no.

Yes and yes but I don't know personally.

However, if you check out Oldroads.com, look for their discussion boards, scroll until you find the "Balloon Tire" board and post there you might get a few answers.

You might want to give this a try as well. The one thing about the Heavy Duty vs the regular Cruisers... Rims. The oe rims for a heavy duty used to be and still tend to be of a heavy gauge steel, rather than the allow rims they are putting on the regular cruisers.
