Fifty Plus (50+) - Want to guess how many I'll eat??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Tomorrow morning I'm heading out with some friends to do the "Tour de Donut". It's a 30 mile fun race with two rest stops stocked with donuts. For each donut you eat they will subtract 5 minutes off your elapsed time.
I'll be competing in the 50+ female group. Last year this group was won by a lady in our cycling club. She ate 9 donuts and probably weighs 100 lbs soaking wet. She won't be riding this year so I'm hoping to beat her time:D I talked to her earlier this week and she gave me some pointers.....wash them down with coffee and don't throw them up:eek:
After this event we'll be driving to Findlay to ride the Hancock Horizontal 100 on Sunday. I'm hoping I've recovered by that time:o
So how many donuts will I eat? I'm not a fast rider so I'll need to eat a lot!

If it were me they would owe me time at the end...just sayin'. :roflmao2:;)
9 is a lot but doable. I'm guessing 7.

You could go take a 30 mile ride, eat good food, and have an all-around great time, and still get home before you even started.

So if I could do the ride in 2 hours I'd have to eat 24 donuts to break even?

There you go...almost like traveling back in time.

What? You can't do this? Where is your sense of adventure? (not to mention your pancreas' ability to combat the blood sugar overload.)

I didn't say I couldn't do it, it does sound daunting, though. I vote 8 for Beverly.

Yeah, but that wouldn't be good enough to win. Every year the winners have huge negative times.

Last year the most donuts consumed was 18 for a male and 15 by a female. According to their website the average consumption was 4. I know I can do 4:thumb:
I think you'll do about 2, the most 3, have fun.

What type and size donuts are they? We need more information!!!
Are they small cake donuts? Regular-sized frosted donuts? Large, filled donuts? Tiny "Little Debbie" donuts? Krispy Kreme donuts?

Krispy Kreme........... Yum. they just melt in your mouth.

I've never participated in the event, nor am I likely to, so this is hearsay.
I understand they are big greasy glazed donuts that are provided by a local bakery. The serious guys pile several together and mash them down to squeeze all the air out so they can eat them more quickly (or is it eat more - quickly?).
Oh wow, that sounds like fun! I'll guess.....6. My favorite donut is a big apple fritter..... eat one for me! :)

Do you get more time for bear claws and Cinnamon Rolls? If not go for the plain cake. And I think you can do five.
Another " Tour de Donut " ?
Here's one that's been done by the Boeing Employees Bicycle Club near St. Louis for a few years....

Since you are riding a century the next day, you'll need to take it easy and carbo-load. So ride slowly and eat a dozen donuts. :D

I had a paper route back in the 50s. The first part of the route was downtown and I walked. The local bakery was on my route and sometimes I would buy a dozen donuts and eat them all before I got back to the paper office. I then had to get on my bike and deliver the rest of my route. BTW donuts were 60 cents per dozen then but I only made $7 a week on my paper route.
Can I come down and just do the donut eating half of the event and skip the racing?

Good Grief.... Not me, nothankyou. I'd get about 3 minutes out from the first coffee&donut stop and I'd be over to the side orally filling the ditch to the accompaniment of rap like gagging sounds.....

I have a real problem with overload on things like donuts. The whole body goes lethargic after 1 or 2. SO, I would just go for the ride, not eating the doughnuts.
Howeer, I guess Beverly will eat 5.

You could build up enough negative time that you could just casually spin your way through the event and have a chance of winning.

This is a great idea, we eat the donuts, post our scores, and Beverly gets the points credited to her - Team Tour de Donut!

We had a great time on this ride. The course was flat, the weather was great and the headwinds were minimal.
There were two rest stops with donuts. Unfortunately the donuts were glazed and my very least favorite. I seldom eat donuts and when I do it's generally whole wheat or blueberry.
I skipped breakfast and carried coffee in my water bottles because I knew I would need something to wash down the donuts. At the first stop I was able to wash down 4 of them. The people I ride with were surprised I ate that many. At the second stop I was only able to wash down 2 of them for a grand total of 6 for the ride. This took 30 minutes off my total ride time of 2:30. I thought the ride was 30 miles but it was 35:notamused: I also spent too much time at the first rest stop.
The most donuts ate by a female was 10. The most ate by a male was 25:eek: This fellow was average size and I have no idea where he put them. He evidently had done other events like this because they said his record was 33.
It was around 7:00 in the evening before I felt like eating again:) I don't think I'll be eating any donuts for a long time.

Hey! Are we still eating donuts? Today was the first chance I had to get one, so I did. The counter girl at our cafe was shocked, but I was glad to help such a worthy cause. Sorry, no pictures.

Nice ride, Beverly! That works out to 1 donut for every 5.8333333333 miles.
A pizza ride would be a good idea . . . hmmmmmm . . .
...Or a TTT ride (Tavern To Tavern).

Nothing better than a blueberry buttermilk doughnut from VG's donut shop in Cardiff-by-the-Sea CA. That was my reward for a long ride back in the day (before I gained weight from just thinking about doughnuts).

Whew! Glad VG's is clear out in California, makes it harder for me run there for a fix.
I love blueberries any way I can get 'em.
