Foo - Why can't all MP3 players be like this...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a 512MB Napster player that I got "free" with a subscription a while ago.

Drivers needed? None. It supports two modes of file transfers. You can have it work as a USB flash drive where you just copy files to it and it indexes them and plays once disconnected from the computer. It also supports MTP mode, for copying on a file level, and confirming the files copied without issue.

Mount the drive and low level erase it in Linux (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda), as soon as you disconnect the player, it automatically realizes it needs to format its flash memory, does so, and is ready to go.

The OEM is DNC Tech (www.dncmultimedia.com). Unfortunately, they are out of the MP3 player business.

Why can't more MP3 players be like this, where it doesn't require special drivers or software (Zune player, iTunes) to work? I'd like to see a player with a non trivial size (30-60 gigs) be like this, and the last player I saw that was like this was an Archos player. The Archos player had quality issues though (a metal burr on the case, randomly would power off, corrupting its FAT filesystem), so had to return it.

All of my Zens have been really easy to use. I find the 3rd party Mac equivalent to be quite nice for my 30 gig Zen. My 2 gig Zen Stone doesn't need any special drivers.

I dislike my zen microphoto 8gb. once in a while it will crash and that corrupts the MFT making file sorting through explorer a nightmare. That is unless I wipe all data off and reload it again.

I wish these damn 'mp3' players would accept ogg as well.
oh well, at least I can replace the battery on the zen like I can on a cell phone.

My Sansa's work pretty easy. When I plug it in, Media Player opens up and I can just drag and drop any songs on to it and be done. I hate itunes though I suffer through it so I can use my shuffle when I ride.

I'm using a SONY Net MD (MiniDisc) player. It uses re-recordable discs that are similar to floppies, but are actual CD's and 2" X 2". I love it. No special drivers, either. All of my programs 'see' it, most certainly JetAudio. Each CD holds up to 7 full length CDs. I love it. 1 AA battery.

Just saying.
