Bicycle Mechanics - Holes?

Has anyone come across these holes before? I assume they are for either an electrical or maybe control cable of some sort, but what? They both appear to have a thin brazed on fairing. The thin plastic tube used to exit at the top until I pulled the bottom one to see what it was:innocent:.

My first thought was internal cables or wiring but you've got downtube shifters so it would have to be brake but there's no brake caliper down there so that leaves electrical but no one would mount a light down there and back in those days (clamp on downtube shifter days) there were no bar mount computers to register your cadence so it can't be for a cadence pickup wire so now I'm stumped..... HOLLY RUN ON SENTANCE BATMAN!

?? Wire from electric rear hub to light up front ??? might go through there??? Just adding my blind guess to the mix ...

All the generator hubs were front wheels though, right?

That's exactly what it is. I've seen this on many older quality Japanese and European touring bikes.

But it's supposed to be mounted to the underside of the chainstays, not on the front of the seatstays.

Well thank goodness I haven't damaged the Flux Capacitor.
These holes are on an '84 Revell Romany (a local London builder). The bike is a tourer in the mould of the Dawes Galaxy et al. The holes aren't threaded and they actually enter at a lead angle. I think the generator idea is definitely the most likely. I've never seen one before, must have been and gone during my 'fallow' period.
Yes, the shifters are Suntour Power shifters and they are a definite improvement on the pure friction shifters of my youth having said that I still hanker for a pair of Campy bar end shifters; they were the bees knees in my day.
