BMX - What kind of locks do you guys use?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm looking primarily guys and gals that are riding in the city. Do you just use a big ass chain and a padlock or one of those ulocks? also, where do you keep it while you are riding?

I take my bike everywhere, inside stores and stuff. I don't trust locks or people.

If i just go into a store i usually just bring it into the lobby of what ever store. If not, then i usually just get in and out as fast as possible and check on it alot. I heard that kryptonite u locks were great. And leave your bike by a window so you can see it on the inside.

I live in downtown Philadelphia and always lock up with a Kryptonite U-lock. When I commute to work on my road or bmx bike it's always locked up at the front of the building I work in. At home I lock up the beater bikes outside and bring the nice ones in for the night. I agree with FuzzyRider on this one, I leave bikes outside that I can't afford to have stolen. We have beater bikes to commute with and get beer with which can be 'safely' locked up, and nice bikes to really ride or session with that never leave our sides when out and about. But to your point, Kryptonite U-Locks.

i used to have a really nice gt bike that got stolen because i had those crappy bendy locks you find at target/kmart. Someone cut right through it and took my bike...
Now i use those U locks because they seem much stronger, i wouldnt trust my bike with anything but that or a thick ass chain.
The only thing that i worry about is that someone might steal your parts. For example, someone might take your wheels, seat, etc...
For a decent lock get one that is both Sold Secure Gold and ART Four Star rated. Sold Secure and ART are independent testers for the insurance industry.

Ulocks are uncuttable but the ones with the circular keyhole can be picked with a pen tube.

If you're riding and planning on doing tricks and jumps you should also plan on not having to stop and lock up your bike and what not. If so bring a backpack, as you always should with your lock AND your tools and spare parts or whatever in. I use a cable and a regular padlock to lock onto the cable and it's solid. I live in Los Angeles area so, it is worth it to lock it up...

im in LA too, but i think its worth it to lock your bike no matter where you are. It's not fun having to walk home after getting your bike stolen. trust me, i know from experience

Locks are made so people cant just ride off.
They only slow down the process of being stolen.
But, I use a SCHOLAGE to a MASTERLOCK. Its 15' long for all off my friends at school.
If you are locking up more than one bike, try to put the better bike on the inside and go threw as many parts of the bike as you can.

Because everyone just carries them around. Really, don't be stupid. Of course they can be cut, but what are the chances of that and how many people would notice you.

On guard makes some nice locks. This is the one I use for in and out.http://www.onguardlock.com/lockviewer.php?type=coil&model=5028 U locks are of course more secure, but harder to transport. My Doberman is pretty beefy for a cable and has an unpickable key(s).

I live by a busy narrow highway. And it would take me like 25-30 minutes to get to school. It would probably still be quicker than the bus.

bulldog mini u lock fits in the back pocket while riding around.
i just lock my bikes to the bike rack. no problem so far. if you care a whole lot, get a cable to go through the frame and wheels.

Kryptonite STD 3000 New York Lock. I have one of the OnGuard Bulldogs as well, but I like the Krytponite U-lock better; it's a little easier to handle on a day to day basis and pack along more easily. I also carry a 3/8" armored cable with a key lock for those quick lock-up jobs where I'm not really out of sight of the bike, just to keep it from rolling off. U-lock + cable gives you a few more options as to where you can lock up, and what you can lock up to. Makes it tougher on Mr. Bike Thief too, since he needs different tools to deal with the cable and the U-lock.

it probably is a little eccentric! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
but it's hard to find my bike these days so i think it's kinda worth the effort!
but I used to use a Kryptonite until I found out you can EASILY crack one with a Bic pen (especially here in Vegas where EVERYTHING heats up really quick during the summer)
and...

I ride my really ****ty BMX, so nobody ever wants to steal it. I keep my good BMX at home. the lock I use is one of those wire ones with a padlock. it's all I need around toronto... odd, since Igor's out on bail. you'd think I'd need something bigger.

Any, even if it's small and simple like this one; http://www.rei.com/product/736398. Will eliminate most opportunity thefts when you are just going in and out.
I was curious what most use for their bmx. I have u-locks for everything else, but they are the cheaper skinny ones. After putting all the effort I have restoring the bmx I have, I would hate for it to be stolen, besides walking home s*cks. I was thinking with the fatter frame staying with a u-lock, I'd have to get a more expensive larger and fatter one. Seeing how I went US Navy theme with the battleship gray and black, that heavy duty chain with a padlock would be fitting for it. A huge anchor chain in the spirit of the bike theme.

http://www.bikesomewhere.com/images/large/MasterLock-Chain4.jpg
Anyway, a friend of mine had his Electra stolen using one of those heavy chains last year (2010) at the beginning of summer. Carrying that much weight is a bit pointless. I'm trying to recall whether they cut the actual lock itself rather than the chain. Probably, most likely cut the lock.
Well, went with a $ 28 delivered Onguard 5022D. Basically a small one or two bike security solution, locked to a steel pole or hand rail is about all to expect from it. Close to 1/3 of the total price was S&H & taxes for an on-line purchase. I'm happy with it for what it is. It's heavy, more than a u-lock, but nothing like a longer and heavier duty chain lock. The length of this particular model, it'll fit over your head and wear like a 3 lb necklace, but I would tend to think that would be annoying over a longer riding distance. Chain is 8 mm square link steel, not hex and the lock comes with 5 keys, none are lighted. It was a relatively fair value for what it is and my expectations.
