I was coming around one of the hairpins, and out of nowhere a deer is standing in the middle of my path. I had enough time to get around him, but the big decision was on which side. I was afraid he would either attack me, or try to escape in the wrong direction. Fortunately, he moved just in time.... phew.

Might one ask. Where is Fernwood. Descents, once just hit a rock.. The result was a torn ligament.

Ya know, if you have to hit something on a descent, a deer might not be so bad. It's like a big dog. Both of you go "Ooof" upon impact, then you pick yourselves off the ground and continue on. I jest of course. Glad you didn't get hurt. Fernwood is among the more twisty of Santa Monica Mountain routes. I like it a lot, but I'm also aware that it could bite me.

Where were you? Top, middle, bottom?

I bumped a deer once with my van. A big, 12-passenger van. The impact was felt throughout and it stopped the van cold. Didn't faze the deer one bit. Big animals.

don't be so sure you'd come out ok after hitting a deer. i know a couple of guys who have hit deer on their motorcycles and have totaled the bike. i also rode past (on my motorcycle) the aftermath of a guy who hit a deer at 100 mph. he cut the deer in half, the halves were on opposite sides of the road. the rider actually came out of it ok, covered head to toe in blood but ok. his buddy behind him crashed from hitting the pool of blood and had minor injuries. they were both wearing full leathers which is pretty important if you plan on walking away from sliding on asphalt at high speed.
