Road Cycling - Which pedals? Advice please

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was looking to buy a new set of pedals for my bike and have seen a couple of good deals on eBay and was wondering if someone could let me have an opinion on which would be most suitable for road use with some slightly rougher terrain. Predominantly road use though (although the roads where i live are pretty rough anyway).
Ones i seem to be able to get a good deal on are:
Shimano SPD-SL R600
Egg Beater Stainless Steel
Egg Beater Candy SL
I actually own SPD-SL road shoes so the SPD-SL pedals i'm sure would work best but am worried they might not be suitable for the rough roads where i live.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

The egg beaters are good because of the 4 sided entry and they are pretty easy to get in and out of. the ultegra atelast for me sucked for frequent clipping in and out.

Thanks for the reply
Do you reckon the egg beaters would work ok with my road shoes because i thought they were predominantly designed for mountain bikes? And does anyone know if the cleats are compatible.

Providing your shoes have the bolt pattern for a SPD cleat, you can use an Egg Beater cleat easily. For a little bit of extra moulah, you can even buy an Egg Beater Road Cleat (http://www.crankbrothers.com/products/accessories_roadcleat.php), which comes with pontoons to stop you slipping all over the place.
Egg Beaters (or variations e.g. Candy SL) are great for when you need to release often.

Ok seems as though egg beater is the my best bet then, and i like the idea of the road cleat aswell so will probably give it a try.
Thanks alot. Any other opinions are more than welcome.

I use Egg Beaters on my mtb and roadie. I think they are fantastic if you have really stiff shoes. I bought some moutain biking race shoes and they are stiff and I don't have that annoying road bike shoe "waddle". Perfect solution for me.

Second that. The Beaters (and the variations thereof, Mallet C and Candies) are excellent. Easy clip in/out, nice float, secure. And the bonus of not having to slip and slid in road shoes (assuming you go the MTB shoe route).
I'll still use my Looks on the Roadie though, since I've got a couple sets of cleats and the hole pattern isn't compatible with Beaters. Bought some Kool Kovers to alleviate the Qwik Rip slide.
if you're not planning to go racing, the beaters are a good option.
Rough roads? your shoe will mostly take the damage not the cleats. When I walk on my roadshoes on gravel, the Carbon fiber lowers get scratches.. Its an eyesore :(
That's why I use MTB shoes on the roadbike now, w/ spd pedals.
But I vote for the spd-r. You have spd-r shoes.. and a roadbike..
