Introductions - Belated Hello

Hi,
I'm from Eastern Massachusetts. I've been back on the saddle for almost two months after a veeeeeeeery long hiatus. I've got a ways to go before getting back to being the two-wheeled maniac I was once greatly feared for.
I like Mountain, Road biking and touring. Not a racing competitor but my specialty is riding up and through anything. I also secretly enjoy exhausting other riders. I push my rides pretty hard. Not a stunt guy or an overly technical rider and there are plenty of people out there who are faster and more fearless than I am but once I start, I'm not much for stopping.
My current rides include an `07 Novara Bonanza and a Univega Road bike that's so old it has those Biopace chainrings that went out of style along with the Electric Slide. I'll have to retire that thing one of these days but for now it's solid and fast. I also have a retired `94 Bridgestone MB and a loaded `79 Schwinn Suburban which is a total blast to bang around town in.
I hope to be a solid contributor in this forum. However, my bike savvy is stuck in the last century so for the time being I'll be asking more than answering.

Hi Tom--there is nothing wrong with being stuck in the last century--it just means that you may get a lot of enjoyment out of reading the Classic & Vintage forum, that's all!

ever think of using retro U-vega to commute? that's what i did with atala (stolen) and currently use 1989 performance vitesse for. i tour with 1994 bNash 6000t, mtb w/1988 raleigh technium, club ride w/c-dale 600sx, and ride 'bent with 1999 bikeE ct.

ironically, i get my most miles from commuting, would rather tour, or tour... :-)

my last self-contained tour was 2004 through your state from NJ to Maine following east coast. as the rest, cape-cod was interesting and eventfull!

Let me tell you about my vega....
Over the weekend I got it out of storage, spent about an hour getting it up to speed and I went for my first road bike ride in roughly ten years. After riding nothing but my mountain bike for the past two months, I was totally unprepared to ride in the tall gears again and yesterday was a real gut-buster. I thought my deathrides were over but this morning my quads are still singing to me. That's ok though. it rode very well and I even got it up to 35 for a few seconds.
My last tour was on that bike and I went with a friend to the Cape and back on a four-day jaunt. My knee was like a rusty hinge and the bike kept blowing spokes (on the sprocket side of course) but we had a great time.
To answer your question, right now it's all about burning the fat and there's a lot of it. Ride, bonk, repeat (do they still call it bonking?).
Hopefully in the not too distant future, I'd like to get a more up-to-date racer and a real tour bike. I've had my eye on an "IF" tourer but for the time being I'm satisfied with the performance of the Univega.

An IF tourer would be quite the upgrade, but the Univega is still a nice bike in its own right!
