Southeast - In Gainesville, FL this week...question about roads

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'll be in Gainesville, FL from Thursday-Saturday this week and had a question about a couple of roads. I'm staying at the Red Roof Inn at the I-75/SW Archer Intersection and on Map My Ride there looked to be a couple of route that headed South following either 441 through Paynes Prairie State Preserve or 121 (SW Williston Rd). Does anyone know if these are relatively safe roads to ride on? 441 looks interesting because it goes through the preserve but I'm not keen on riding heavily trafficked roads. Do you know if they have bike lanes? Thanks.

US 441 is a divided four lane with a wide shoulder for bikes and a rumble strip that separates the shoulder and the traffic lanes.
Williston Road is a two-lane with wide shoulders for bikes.
Both of these roads are used extensively by cyclists.

Mollusk, thanks for the reply. That's the exact info I was looking for. Looks like those are great roads to ride on. Thanks a ton.

Generally, how is the cycling in and around Gainesville? The area looks beautiful but I've only spent a short time there. Like 2 days.. I'm from Hollywood Fl...

It is nice cycling except for the lack of any climbing. I am particularly fond of the riding south of Gainesville in the horse farm country.
The lack of climbing is all relative. Coming from Jacksonville, you have more climbing than I will see in a lifetime.
The webmaster for the Gainesville Cycling Club does a pretty good job of posting routes for various rides in the area. Feel free to scan through the maps at http://www.gccfla.org/
