this will be the first time for me on a 16" wheel folding bike. i want to do the 25 miles-ride..but i also want to venture off to 40-miles routes which cover orchard beach and city island. i see 25 and 40 miles share the same route up to orchard beach...i can ride with the 25 miles on first part..then when it comes to orchard beach...join the 40 miles bikes route and then come back to the 25 miles route?

I plan on doing it. Maybe on the singlespeed.

It's a nice ride.
Did it last year and plan to do it again this year.
Vinny..just do the 40.
It's an easy ride.
Just a few hills at the very end.
Would love to do this one again, just marked it in my calendar 20 mins ago. Super busy weekend for me but hopefully I can squeeze it in.

but the 40 miles are not being escorted by the police and marshals which closed off the street completely and provide you a "safety net." the 40 miles provide no safety net. since this is my first tour...i want to take it easy...plus i will be on my 16" dahon 3 speed folding bike! i see the first rest stop for both the 25 miles and 40 miles is near the entrance of orchard beach...so once i reach there..instead of resting...can i venture off with the 40 miles to orcharch beach and city island and then come back to join the 25 miles? yes or no?

I really wanna do it...always mean to and always get lazy by October.....maybe this year.....
Think I might do it, on the singlespeed.

This is an easy ride for anybody, either 25 or 40 miles. It is my favorite ride of the year, for many reasons. I do this ride on my carbon road bike and feel like I'm over-biked. My Bx riding partner rides an inexpensive hybrid and she does just fine.

The way it worked last year was that there were multiple start points. You can do pretty much whatever you'd like.
In terms of the escort there are parts of the 40 miles which are partially escorted (like down that highway). From the start that's most west (too lazy to look it up right now) it's not fully escorted but there are some police to help direct traffic. It's still a super easy, laid back, and safe ride - it's just not all blocked off like the 5 Boro Bike Tour in May. Many parts are pretty slow (<10 mph) and others you can cruise at your leisure.
Don't expect to be fed lots of awesome food - it's a free ride and the rests reflect that. Bring food or be prepared to stop and buy something. I think at the end last year was a coupon for a slice of Dominos to put it in perspective ;) It's still a really great ride with some gorgeous scenery which is the point anyway.

This is one of my favorite organized rides in the NYC area. It's a cool route, people actually cheer you on (as opposed to getting screamed at in Bklyn) and it's FREE. As for the ameneties, they've been scant in the past, but you don't like what's being served at rest stops, you can stop in one of the 100's of restaurants or delis you pass. I usually bring along a couple of Clif Bars.
I think my favorite parts of the ride are riding through Woodlawn Cemetery and that spiral we ride down into Van Cortlandt Park. Riverdale is probably my least favorite part but, fortunately, they have a short cut.

a quick question about the rest stop...how long do they rest before starting it up again?
The ride starts off with feeder groups to the courthouse. There's a few thousand people waiting around until everyone gets there, then everyone's off. After about 20 mins it's a steady stream of cyclists throughout the Bronx.
So the answer there is as long as you need when you get there :)

see the attachment..there are 3 rest stops for the 25 miles and 40 miles. the only difference is there is a bigger stop gap for the 40 miles. i'm asking how long do you stay at each of the rest stop before they start moving again? any1 know?
Last year they waited until the other stops were ready and groups were compressed. I'd guess at least 15-30, possibly up to 45 mins depending which route, when you started, the condition of the group, etc....
It's a very loose ride.

Just signed up for the 25 mile route(35 from the Riverdale start). Looking forward to this since this will be my second tour, with my first ever being the Bike MS Tour two weeks before.

From what I remember, they held the ride at the YMCA rest stop for 20 minutes or so. Last year Igot to the Courthouse late and wound up towards the end of the group. By the time I had a chance to use the Ladies Room and get something to eat, the ride was rolling again.
At Orchard Beach and Van Courtlandt Park it seemed like people just continued on whenever they were ready.

Stacy, actually they held the 40 up at Orchard Beach and many riders just went ahead.
Vincent, Regarding the rest stop, The 25 and 40 BOTH stop at the Y, but NOT at the same time. So you may get there before the 40 and jump on, OR get there after and do it by your lonesome.

which stop is the Y? is it the 2nd rest stop for the 25th miles and 1st rest stop for the 40 miles? i was thinking doing on the 3rd rest stop for the 25th miles where i will join the 40th miles...if you look at my attachment above. the 3rd rest stop is right below orchard beach...so i was planning to go to orchard beach and then city island...after i'm done with that..rejoin the 25th miles route. what is the best way..if i dont want to ride by myself and with both the 25th miles and 40th miles?

One warning about the feeder rides. They go at an excruciatingly slow pace. I would just start at the courthouse (or whatever it is) down on 158th & Gr Concourse which is the real starting point. My one friend in the Bronx started up at the Gardens and we didn't meet up until Orchard Beach when I waited for her.

Well you could just cut the map into eight pieces, drop them in your hemet, and then choose a section to ride at random. But seriously, just do the 40 mile route. If you try to double back and do Orchard Beach, and then City Island, (in reverse) you'll get all messed up and wind up doing twice as much mileage.

well the 25th miles visit mott haven and the 40th miles visit orchard beach and city island and i want to combine the best of both world. plus i will be carrying a gps phone with me. but it will be easier if i can spot which one is the 25th miles and 40th miles group once i enter and exit out of orchard beach...any1 know?

Hows the road quality on this? Trying to decide whether to bring my Road bike or not.... It is more comfortable than my mountain bike....
Some of it really nice. Some...not so much.

Is there room on the road to avoid the bumps, or is the road overall that bad?
You could always be one of those guys decked out in a kit carrying their CF bike over them :p
Some spots from what I remember (and I haven't been up in a year) no, but you're free to slow down to a crawl or carry. Not terribly long sections - I remember one area through a park that was choppy and some construction plates which I'd like to think has been finished up by now.

I don't remember anything that a road bike couldn't handle. Just the hills at the end of the 40 miler which kicked my ass cuz I had just started riding a fixed gear that year and wasn't ready for the hills.
Anyone know if there's a rain date? Realistically I highly doubt I'll be able to make it :(

Well I do consider myself a roadie, and I wear spd-sl shoes, however I refuse to wear lycra (except when im doing a triathlon in my tri shorts) and usually ride in a comfortable t-shirt and fox racing BMX shorts (all the benefits of lycra bike shorts with none of the homosexuality!).
My bike is not all CF tho, so I'll ride over it hehe!
I may do it. Last year, some guy did the ride with deep dish carbon tubies.

+1 I've done the 50 mile extenstion a couple of times and it was basically a 10mph tour around various Bronx neighborhoods and landmarks. In addition, it started late & there were at least 2 stops in 2 different parks. That's fine, just don't expect to blast through that section.
If you want to put in extra miles and you live outside of the Bronx, just ride up to the start at the courthouse. I did that last year with a couple of peeps. It was fun.
It is a mildly chaotic scene at the start. So expect lines at sign up and don't expect the ride to start at 10am sharp. Remember, it's free.
