Bicycle Mechanics - 8 to 9 speed,9 to 10 speed?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have a 8 speed mtn.bike and I'm thinking about getting some nice Chris King wheels built for it.My next mtn.bike will be a 9speed.Can I keep these wheels for the new bike after I put on a 9speed cassette?
Same question for my 9speed 'cross bike.If I build some King wheels now can I just put on a 10speed cassette and use these on another bike in the future?

Yes you can. The spline pattern on Shimano and SRAM cassettes is the same for 8, 9 and 10 speeds. The dropout spacing may be your only issue., but they will be very close- probably close enough, especially if you have a steel frame.
