Anybody doing this?

http://www.nycc.org/eny/

I doubt I'd be able to do the 100....maybe 65, more likely the 50, assuming this is hilly and the pace is faster overall than the NY Century or Five Boro tour in April.

Sounds cool, too bad I'm away that weekend, It'd be cool to meet up and ride.

I signed up, just don't know if I'll make it. I'm in Vegas until the day before and with a new lil' tyke in the house who knows if I'll be up for it. I'll play it by ear that morning.

I also have ridden anything more than my commute since mid-July. I figure in the spring I'll be gearing up for centuries again, at least I got in one century this year...

I'm signed up for the metric.

Do you know how hilly this ride is? Are there many hills with greater incline than Grand Army hill at Prospect Park? Thanks.

I'll be doing the 50 to Piermont. All rides are self guided this year so just ride at whatever pace your comfortable with. Last years 50 mile route was fairly flat except for the ride up Rockleigh Rd going, and Walnut on the return.

I'm doing the 50 to Piermont as well. I've been told that the hills aren't too crazy -- I was thinking of it as doing 8 laps around Central Park, but only doing the hill 4 times... but I might be way off about that.

It'll certainly be less congested than 8 laps around Central Park. FWIW riding last years route (with 7 extra miles door to door) my Edge 305 gave me 2800' of elevation gain, though I can't vouch for its accuracy as the same data file loaded into Sporttracks software shows 2041', still a bit more than doing the full park loop 8 times.

Yes, and I'm doing the 100. I believe you go upgrades when you hit Rockland State Park. Going up 9W is a *****. Going up TO 9W from just about anywhere is also a *****.

The hill climb up 9W is the PP hill x1000.

LoL. So uh...does this start getting hard around the Tappan Zee Bridge or the GWB? You are scaring me... Guess I'll find out next week!

It's pretty much just rollers until you pass Piermont, then there's a somewhat long and steep climb into Nyack (Piermont is essentially inside a bowl). There are 2 moderate climbs when you're coming back on 9w, after which it gets progressively easier.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the detailed description. Should be an awesome ride! Maybe I'll see some of you all there. Peace.

Just gear down, spin, and don't try to keep up with faster riders, and you'll be fine. They're just hills, not alps. I do them on my folder sometimes.

If the route allows and you're wondering what to eat in Nyack, the Morning Buns (http://www.runciblespoonbakery.com/) are as close as breakfast comes to Nirvana.

Last day to register with discounted prices.

Anyone else doing this? Don't want to go solo.

I'm registered for the 50. Plan on leaving early to get back for work in the afternoon.

Sorry if I made it sound more daunting than it really is.

The ride isn't so bad, but it's definitely not as simple as, say, the NYC Century. There are lots of rollers going into Piermont, then there is a progressive climb into Nyack and Haverstraw going into Rockland State Park.

Coming back, they will make you go up 9W, which can be as challenging as you make it. You can spin up it, or burn your way up; it's really up to you. I'm going a completely different way back to avoid climbs, since I hate climbing and know the area fairly well (and might even get more than a century out of it).

i really, really want to do this century, but my knee has been acting up. it was hurting on my 10 mi. morning commute today, so i think i'm going to have to bail on the ride tomorrow. i'm disappointed but i don't want to wreck my knee.

meh, i'll post if i change my mind.

fwiw my 'bad' knee hurt this am too - I think the sudden 10 degree drop made that worse...

Did the metric. Awesome ride, esp the descent down E. Clinton a few miles in...

Left just around 8:00 with a group and then bounced :D It was freezing balls the first hour/hour-half but then the weather got very nice; routes were very clearly marked with the exception of a detour near 9w on the way up and there was one patch of massive glass shards a good 10 yds long on the way back, I think near Palisades.

TY for the advice noteon! Cadence works! I ended up being one of the faster riders.... Only real struggle was crawling up Lydecker hill near the end of the ride while getting a tour of NJ McMansions. 9W was not that bad. Total time was 4:15 (only stopped at 1 of 3 rest stops and at the top of Lydecker hill). Ride time was 3:56.

NYCC peeps were awesome and organized this thing very well. Great bunch.

r u a NYCC member?

I wanna join them this year...I need to do more rides over the winter instead of hibernating like a fat bear as usual.

Awesome ride, esp the descent down E. Clinton a few miles in...

My eyes were tearing too much on the descent to read my computer, but when I looked at it later I had a max speed of 40mph on that descent, and that was with feathering the brakes slightly! Glad traffic was light.

Yeah, my computer says I hit 43.72 on the small cog. I'm scared to imagine how fast we could have gone without any traffic or other bikers. I'm really scared considering that my handlebars cracked in half today riding home from the park

pgoat, I am not a NYCC club member but after this ride I am definately joining. I think it's less than $20 a year and they are a really great bunch of people! You should do this ride for sure next year...you'll love it.

Rolling hills? That was some tough biking for a newbie. I did the 65 miler in a very long time, but a beautiful ride and the my comp said max speed of 41mph on that downhill - complete w/ tears flying and a big grin.

(is it normal for tires to get cut up pretty good on a ride like that? I had no cuts before the ride..)

Thanks to NYCC for setting it up!

Yikes - failed handlebars are one of my biggest fears:eek: Assuming u r ok - whew!

Yes, I've been meaning to join them for some time now. They seem very cool (spoke to their people at the NY Century a few weeks ago) and some friends who belong speak highly of them. I believe you can get a deal by joining before the calendar year ends....

$19 for an individual, $25 for a family membership, a few bucks cheaper if you join online.

Us too - 5BBC were nice people overall but the overall consensus seems to be NYCC ftw. Thanks for the pricing Dendawg!

I'm a member of both clubs, even though I never ride with the 5BBC. I just figure it's cheap enough to support both clubs.

The NYCC has a bunch of weekly rides scheduled as well as informal rides set up through their message boards. Well worth checking out.

Why not just join both? They both support cycling in the city.

noteon

Honestly, because the 5BBC annoyed me too many times.

There are plenty of ways to support cycling in the city without putting my money where I don't feel like putting it. (And I do.)

I did the Half Century to Piermont, and only hit 30 MPH on my fixed gear (I'm nervous about super high RPM cadences). I was running 48x17, but next year I'd probably gear down a little to 46x17 or so. Some of the hills on the return part of the loop (Church street and Walnut street in those super fancy neighborhoods) were completely vicious. Haha, good times.
