Pacific Northwest - Border Crossing

This weekend is my ride from Alki to Granville Island in Vancouver BC. The only time I have ever done a border crossing is with the RSVP so they had a dedicated lane just for us bikers. What is the protocol for border crossing and bikes? Do we use the car lanes or the pedestrian way? We will be crossing at the truck crossing in Blaine.

i'd guess they have signs that tell you what to do. i'd like to know though, as i also want to do a similar ride at some point.

Ride the shoulder and have all your papers ready.

I drive across the border about once a month and can't recall seeing bikes at any of the crossings. I think if there's little or no traffic when you cross I'd just ride with the flow. If there's traffic, become a pedestrian and go inside. In either case, your passport will make getting back into the US easier.

We crossed the border yesteday and you are a pedistrian. You need to check in with them pretty painless. We are returning by Amtrak tomorrow so no worries getting back.

It's pretty painless if you are crossing from the US into Canada. Not so when crossing the other way. The lineups inside the office for peds and cyclists are way longer and way more time-consuming. The US border guards are real jerks and power-trippers. They have absolutely no idea what customer service is, nor do they care. I think they purposely hire the most dysfunctional, maladjusted bullies in the US military and station them at the border crossings. And bullies are exactly what they are. It's really quite ironic that they purport to represent the "American way," that they believe in freedom and liberty, yet they epitomimze the worst excesses of Hitler's National Socialist storm troopers... Just try crossing into the US and see if this isn't the case! (I cross on a regular basis, and I know whereof I speak!)

Yes we had no real problem getting North across the border. Though it is not well signed for bikers or pedestrians. This year for the first time we came back on the train. That is the best way to clear American Customs. I miss the old days , when I was a kid. when crossing the border was painless in both directions.
