Help!! I am looking for a good used road-ish bike for commuting. Where can I find such a thing? I went to the Commuting Cycling Center up on Alberta and was rather surprised at the expenses. I looked on ebay but don't know exactly what to look for. Any comments are appreciated.
Try Sellwood cycle repair. I have not bought a bike from them but have heard good things. Hope the link works

Try Citybikes on Ankeny. The store is at 8th, I think, and the shop is at 19th. A great co-op.
Also try North Portland Bike Works (http://www.cityrepair.org/bikeworks/) at 3951 N Mississippi. They're operate kinda similarly to CCC. Non-profit, sell used stuff, rent out workspace, have classes (or they did when I was in town last summer)... And they're really really nice.
I would imagine that most places that sell used stuff would have prices similar to CCC's (unless CCC just had a bunch of super-fancy bikes when you checked them out). If you really want to go cheaper, you'd probably want to look into buying from private individuals. There's only so low you can go for a bike that was tuned up or even totally rebuilt by paid employees. Any of the places mentioned here are certainly worth supporting if it won't break the bank. Otherwise, checking garage sales and the classifieds etc could become a fun hobby (or perhaps obsession).
Good luck
