Yes, physical activity helps as it can e.g. make insulin resistant folks more insulin sensitive which may prevent overeating.
OTOH, physical activity can promote food intake and if you don't watch your diet, you might end up gaining or maintaining. In the very least case, it's good to find off season activities. When I cycled a TON of miles, I'd gain frightening amts of weight off season.
Always complement with a good diet and...lift weights off season as well as do spinning classes!
