Avoiding HFCS and Artificial Sweetners is getting harder everyday. One of the breads I used to eat just switched from brown sugar to HFCS. :crash:

Or bake your own bread and choose your ingredients. That's what scratch cooking gets you. If someone else does your cooking, it's much harder to pick and choose.

Yes. You can use them to build a fire when you're in the wilderness.

I should post my recipe for Oatmeal Molasses Cinnamon Bread. Yum. I only get a slice or two since my two little boys devour the rest of the loaves like starving wolves.

I kinda feel like the presence of those ads is pretty much like admitting they've just lost.
At the same time, it's fairly obvious why your store-bought bread has switched to HFCS... in America, it's cheaper because we tax sugar importers to protect the HFCS biz.
Still, while I doubt that the little bit of HFCS instead of brown sugar in your bread (Assuming it's there to feed the yeast in something like a sandwich bread and not cinnamon-rasin or something) I'm rather fond of my own homemade white bread recipe. Uses honey and a bunch of white-whole-wheat flour. :)

Fine in moderation' is the part where both sides fail. HFCS isn't great stuff... neither is sugar. It's like all the people who go ap about the fattening properties of McDonalds food - McDonalds food isn't inherently more unhealthy than other burgers and fries, what's unhealthy is the lifestyle of swooping into a drive-through to eat foods that are inherently fatty no matter where they are served or who makes them. In short, 'omg big business and their orbital mind control lasers' strikes again. :p It's not the corn peoples' fault that everyone and their dog wants to pour gallons of sugars into everything they make.

I found this picture awhile back and thought it would be appropriate considering the link to HFCS and Diabetes

One big difference is that regular old cane sugar isn't paid for with my federal tax dollars so that Coca Cola can sell it at lower prices and make a buck more. Our taxes, straight to the soda fountain. Or the belly of the cows that will become Big Mac's.

And this addresses my poit... how exactly?
HFCS is cheap, so producers chose to use it. It's cheap because of screwy taxes. OK.. I never disputed that.
The part I disputed was the idea that HFCS was somehow more evil than other forms of sugar, when the core problem is NOT that the sugar-sweetener of choice is HFCS, but rather that people consume stupidly huge amounts of profoundly sugar-sweetened foods to begin with. The corn producers didn't hold guns to peoples' heads and make them gulp down huge bottles of carbonated HFCS-water (soda) and candy. They did that themselves. And continue to do it, and then blame the HFCS producers for making the products they themselves go out of their way to buy.
Hence, "that evil big box store using it's orbital mind control lasers to make me drive past four local stores to shop there" in a different form.

Well if I'm paying for it, I guess I should use it.
Seems that sweetener is a better use for food (corn) than in the gas tank of an SUV.

I believe his point is that our tax dollars are subsidizing unhealthy food (HFCS) making it cheaper and therefore more available and more appealing to the masses. While it remains a personal choice, having it artificially cheaper isn't helping the situation.

Bam. There it is. In the great big wide scheme of things, don't you think it's a little ridiculous that our tax dollars subsidize fast food and soda and candy, and unhealthy food in general, while organic and healthy foods are at all time high prices? You have to realize how these corn subsidies effect the market. Artificially keeping the cost of crap food low hurts prevents good food from competing in the market on a level field. AND to add to that, you have less money in your wallet with which to spend on said healthy food because you are being taxed up the yin yang to pay for this stuff. No joke, up in the billions. How can people be ok with this?
Wouldn't it make you just a little bit mad if your apartment had a coke machine in the hallway, and everytime someone bought a coke, they came and took a quarter from you and put it in the machine? That's pretty much what's happening.
