Triathlon - my first triathlon...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, i'm going to do my first triathlon (sprint 400m, 20k, 5k) this weekend and I really don't know what to wear. I'm not really concerned about performance but more about comfort and practicality (i'm doing the triathlon to raise money for a charity). I'm a horrible swimmer, a pretty good biker, and an ok runner. I own a cycling jersey + shorts, and running shorts + t-shirt, and i don't know which combo to take (i don't want to spend money on a tri specific suit). I was originally thinking the cycling set because I can take some supplements along and it will be easier to bike (my focus point of the three disciplines), but then again i don't know how comfortable they would be for running or swimming. (I have a hybrid bike with aerobars in case it's of any relevance).
Thanks
Adrian

I'd go with the cycling jersey and bike shorts. They are the most useful and are plenty comfortable on the run. I'd also think running shorts are going to be a drag in the water.

if you put some money into a pair of tri shorts, they just like bike shorts except the pad is smaller so it's more comfortable to run in... and you can swim in them if the water is warm enough.
This way in your transitions you just have to worry about changing your top. I did a tri last weekend and wore a skin tight underarmor for the bike and the run. The only part I regret is how hard it was to put on while wet... hurt my T1 time. Wear something loose and comfy, it wont be as bad as you think it will.
