Mountain Biking - Ghost Shifting

I have a problem with ghost shifting on my front chain rings. I recently broke my old chain and decided to put a new Sram chain on. Everything works fine except for when I have the chain in the middle ring. It keeps jumping off to the lower ring or all the way off very violently when I apply pressure to it such as when i am climbing or putting the hammer down. Again it will not do this in the other chain rings, and it is not rubbing against the front derailer. It sounds like I might have a problem with the middle ring, but I can not see anything wrong with it visually. Any suggestions?

You most likely need a new chain ring. How old was the chain you took off?

What's the front derailer doing. Is it staying in place (positioned over the middle chain ring, shifter in the middle position) or is it moving toward the lower gear? I had a similiar problem with a Grip Shifter that would not hold a shift position.

The chain I replaced had about 650 miles on it. The derailer is staying straight, so it sounds as if I need to replace my middle chain ring. Might just go ahead and buy a whole new crank set and BB while I am at it.

Be sure to check your cassette too. When I replaced my chain I ended up needing new chainrings, and cassette. Look into getting a chainwear checking tool. Only a couple bucks and usually pretty easy and quick to use.

Check your derailuer hanger. It could have a tiny crack that causes ghost shifting. I have completely replaced the drive train before, only to find out I had a hairline crack!!!!!!!
