Foo - Working Like A Kid...

Was thinking back about it tonight...

To make a buck, i cut lawns during the summer. up until recently i wasn't old enough to get a driver's license... so... i needed a way to get to work!

back then i rode on a 40lb FS mountain bike. department store "mountain bike." to this mountain bike i hitched a wagon i built, which weighs also, about 35lbs. Onto this wagon i placed my lawnmower, about 150lbs, my leaf blower, about 50lbs, my weedwhacker, about 20lbs, and carried 1L of water on me as well as other knick knacks to help me do the job (10lbs). sometimes i'd also carry a bag of grass or two, and the gas can on the wagon... that's about 15lbs/bag of grass + 15lbs for the can

Put it all together:
40lb bike
35lb wagon
150lb lawn mower
50lb leaf blower
20lb weed whacker
10lb other stuffs
15lb grass bag
15lb gas jug

total: 335lbs :roflmao2:

and then throw on a 120lb rider (that used to be me :D). i'll tell you: it wasn't easy going up those hills ;). to this day, my fellow riders wonder how i, on my 30lb vintage road bike can sprint up hills!

And no, this isn't a joke. i did do this for a couple years. everything was held tightly in place with bungie cords and there was a ridge 'round the edge of the wagon to keep the gear from falling out. sadly, as a result of the tremendous stress on my body, i developed jumper's knee in both knees. since then i've resorted to gasoline-powered vehicles...

would you have hired me?

Yup. That shows a lot of drive, desire, and ingenuity. All great characteristics.

I'd have hired you to mow the lawn because you just kick ***...


But I'd avoid hiring you as a manager because you know jack about delegation or job costing. :p

No, I wouldn't, cause you'd probably be too tired to do a good job cutting my lawn after struggling to get up on the hill I live on. Now get off my property!

Honda Mower - 96lb. dry weight
Ryobi String Trimmer 17" curved shaft - 10.07 lb.
Ryobi Handheld Gas Blower - 10.4 lb.

Some of your weights may be a bit high.

From having done lawn work in the past, no. Those figures are not exaggerated.
from having done golf course maintenance for 4 years, and hauling (lifting into the back of a club car) around a lot of the same pieces of equipment, i would say yes, those figures are exaggerated.

they are not exaggerated. it's a commercial grade, self-propelled mower. i know other mowers weigh far less, but this mower is a tank by comparison.

the leaf blower is a heavy back-pack leaf blower. throw in the gas, and 45 - 50lbs is not far off.

the weed whacker is also commercial grade. i don't know what crud you're working with, but the heavy-duty stuff on a full tank of gas is just that: heavy.

the grass bags are garbage bags often filled with wet grass. you gonna argue a full garbage bag of grass DOESN'T weigh 15lbs?

been cutting grass for years and do a great job - quite often better than the guys who show up with the trucks. that's what you get with the proper heavy grade equipment.

keep it up, its a fun job. Honestly, i would seriously consider going back to turf school and being a superintendent at a golf course. its a fun time.
