Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Bike trailer

I just finished building my bike trailer. There are so many errands that don't really need a car. Just another way to shad off pounds:)

I hooked it up to my beater neighborhood bike for now, not sure I really want to hitch it to my full carbon, but we will see:)

What kind of hitch are you using?

The hitch is a piece of steel welded to a seat post bolt with an eye on the end. The corresponding piece on the trailer (the tongue) is an L shape, secured in the eye by pin over a washer. Also the hole is 1/2" and the L shape welded to the handle is 3/8" and there is a soft rubber bushing in between. It allows for tilting in corners, but stops the clanking. The tongue is welded in the middle of the front connecting pin inside the conduit.

The side frame are each from one 10' conduit pipe, welded together with pin inside it. I dropped the bed 5 inches lower - for stability of heavy stuff it should be closer to the road. And also the ladder like side frames help with the sturdiness of the bed and the whole trailer.

All the joints are just hand filed to fit the tubing for precise weld - it was not hard to do. The welding is bit fishy since the conduit is galvanized, but once in a lifetime and welding outside I think it does not hurt too bad.

I have a Trek folding trailer that I have used to pull my sons around the neighborhood. Pulling 60 or 70 lbs of trailer and boys is a nice way to get a good work out.

Try pulling 140 lbs. of groceries in a BoB rated for half that. ;)

Great job! I modified this kid trailer to haul my 100lb Golden Retriever with bad hips. And they are right, even a short ride can be a workout with a full trailer.

Yes it is. I also bought the tubing bender, which made it much much easier.

There is a guy in the roadie forum who has a smaller dog and he has modified a kid trailer with a harness and pulls his dog everywhere he goes. The dog even has goggles, called, are you ready? Doggles.

I'd love to pull my dog, except she's too much of a dork, and English Mastiff, and would take at least a 4 cylinder engine to pull, lol.

Thank you Wino Ryder. Yours was one of the many I looked at while doing my research. What's your experience with the toungue flexing under heavy load? Mine feels like a pulsing especially pulling load up the hill.
