Hi all:
I get a spark and pop when I plug the battery pack into the wire harness. Is this normal, Is it harmful? I have a crystallite 5303 (pheonix racer) motor, 48V SLA batteries. The previous owner says it is OK but I don't like it.

100% normal. Just the caps charging or discharging

Get a keyed switch. Plug in the batteries and controller first. I got one at ebay for like 6 bucks and it can handle 100 amps.

My tricycle is fitted with a keyed switch and I really like it. Sparks while plugging in aren't good for the pulse rate.

Yes, and with a key switch it still arcs but you just don't see it. There's little current so it's not damaging anything.
