For all the old time racers out there.
Who was the first Stetina to win a National Championship?
Can you answer without Googling?

Without googling, I'll go with Wayne because he's older than brother Dale.

Just a reminder, there are four Stetina brothers, Wayne, Dale, Joel, and Troy, and all four of them have won a National Championship. So far we have two votes for Wayne, but is that the correct answer?

Hey this is the 50+ forum...how long are you gonna make us wait for the answer? Sheesh, at my age I don't even buy green bananas. :D

Troy won the Midget National Road Championship in 1975.
Wayne won the Senior National Time Trial Championship in 1975.
The Senior Time Trial Championships were held two days before the Midget National Road Championships.
Wayne was the first, by two days.
Hi,
I would have guessed Wayne, but I would never have guessed Troy was second.
I "raced" against Wayne and Dale a couple of times back in the 1970s in some Category 1/2/3 races. I was a Cat. 3 (if you couldn't guess). :o
I got to "race" against Wayne again this past June in the SoCal Masters 50-54 District Criterium Championships. He's still a lot faster than me.

Give it up for Central Indiana, home of the Stetina's.

What's a Stetina?
Is that a female version of a Stetson?

I am shocked, I figured it would be Papa Roy from they way he walked arround telling Wayne and Dale what to do at a race.

No, no...wasn't that the name of the Nathan Lane drag queen in "The Bird Cage"?

I know Papa Ray was a fairly decent rider in his own right, but as far as I know he never won a National Championship.
But I'm neither that old, nor from Indiana, so perhaps someone really old can enlighten us as to Ray's cycling history.

Didn't know he was the first, but I watched Wayne win the National Road Championship in Cherokee Park, Louisville, KY in '76. It looked like he was starting the final sprint in WAY too high a gear, but it worked.
I finally got to talk with him about it in '93 (approx.) and he told me that he couldn't spin a smaller gear that late in a tough race, but he knew he could power up the larger gear . . . so that's why he finished the race that way.
