I know people post with questions like this all the time and it can be pretty annoying but after googling and reading other threads I still need some solid advice.

I am seeking advice between two cyclocross bikes. I have ridden road for less than two years now and am excited to try racing cyclocross. Only thing is I need a bike first.

I can get a 08 Specialized Tricross Singlecross for $700
or
08 Felt F1X for $1000

I was kind of excited to try ss cyclocross and herd it can sometimes give you an advantage but want to get what would be best in the long run. Also I will be cycling in the bay area and it may double as a commuter. Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated.

Felt has a singlespeed for 09, too.

Yeah but can't get as good of a deal on it. I am looking more to if I should go SS or not as well.

Brifters, a front and rear deraileur, rear cassette, extra chain ring...

a set of 105 brifters alone will cost you almost that much.

The big question is...what do you want to do? If you want to ride SS get one. if you want to ride geared - the felt is not a bad way to go.

You could also just go get a crosscheck or another versatile frame and build it up as a SS or geared.
