Relatively new to the area and looking for a decent route from Claremont to Newport Beach on the SART. I Googled the route to the Green River Golf Course, where I think I'd pick up the trail.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=claremont,+ca&daddr=5215+Green+River+Rd,+Corona,+CA+92880+(Green+River+Golf+Club)&hl=en&geocode=%3BFSTUBAIdRIL8-CHMKDCvUKRt7A&mra=ls&dirflg=h&sll=33.983485,-117.717025&sspn=0.266464,0.66124&ie=UTF8&ll=33.983225,-117.645721&spn=0.266464,0.66124&z=11

I have a work event that starts around 7:30-8:00 am. I was thinking about leaving my home around 3:30 am to do this. I have lights and appropriate gear/fitness, but I'm concerned if the roads will be safe in these areas.

An alternative might be to drive to the West Corona Metrolink station and ride the ~30 miles to the event. I imagine the SART itself is safer than parts of Ontario/Chino.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I used to train with a guy that lives in Claremont and we would regularly ride to Newport via SART. You would do a lot of backtracking if you went to Grenn River. The quickest way is to wind through Pomona and Diamond Bar to Brea Canyon and then ride south to the SART. You can pick it up off of Kraemer.

Pomona before sunrise? Are the gang bangers asleep by then?

I imagine by 4am I should be fine. It's a short section in Pomona and Diamond Bar/Brea seem pretty safe.

Redal, thanks for the tip. I've ridden Brea Canyon from here before, and see that it cuts off about 10-15 miles.

I think I'll try this tomorrow.

I know Claremont to the end of SART is 42 miles using that route..

You can also ride through Carbon Canyon in Chino but the traffic in the morning is much busier than Brea Canyon..

The easiest route is DB blvd to Brea Canyon/Left on BC.. Brea Canyon to State College/Left Turn..
State College to Lambert/Left Turn// Lambert to Kraemer/Right turn.. Follow for about 5-6 miles to SART..

What part of Claremont do you live in? You know that Pomona borders you on the south and west, right? Kids from parts of Pomona also attend Claremont Unified School District, including Claremont High School. The areas of Pomona that you need to ride through are no worse than some areas of Claremont that I've been in. BTW, I wouldn't ride anywhere before sunrise, not because of danger, I just can't force myself onto the bike that early.

I was going to suggest that as well, but remembered the traffic. I think the Brea Canyon way is slightly faster (less climbing, I think).

I did White --> Mission --> Diamond Bar --> Brea Cyn Rd today and it worked well. Left @ 4am and picked up the SART just south on Kraemer Rd. Thought I was lost for a second because the SART is actually on whatever road Kraemer turns into, I figured it'd be on the north side where it's still named Kraemer. Made it to my destination near the airport in Newport around 7ish. Just over 46 miles.

I was surprised at the traffic on Brea Cyn Rd at 5am. Even at 4, folks in Pomona were starting to stir.

I've lived in the area for a while so I knew Kraemer turns into Glassell, but the entrance to sart still threw me off the first time I was there. My second einstein move that same day was on my way back from work (near Anaheim Stadium), and instead of going under the bridge for a smoother transition onto north-bound Kraemer, I took the first (south-bound) exit on Kraemer and had to be the a-hole that bunny hopped the median.

Pomona before sunrise? Are the gang bangers asleep by then?Gang bangers are asleep but the crack heads and tweekers are wide awake. But they are usually looking to steal junk they can hawk fast and they don't like confrontation.

Kraemer turns into Glassell. I meant to note that. I think the reason I didn't was because I thought you could see the bike path by the time the street name changed.
