On the commute to work yesterday, I found my regular route a mess with ice, and in low lying areas 3-4 inches of water. I navigated the route, but decided that riding that route home in the middle of the night would be dicey at best. Images of laying in the puddle struggling to get my cell phone out with a broken arm, leg, pelvis danced through my head. So I opted for the alternate.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE! My regular route parallels an alternate route, but is a rail to trail paved path, it is a glorious path, I don't have to ride with traffic for 8 miles, but as it is a rail bed it is an even grade. The alternate is a series of rollers, that reached out last night to sting my legs with some lactic burn (nice to feel again). I found my self in a wonderful battle a southern crosswind, reportedly at 5 mph, but felt stronger, and these rollers I'd forgotten about. By the time I was down to my last five miles, I was cursing the wind, but planning to ride that commute again tonight, and make it regular, for the hills! We don't have a lot of them, but starting my day off with watching the 2000 TdF, and Lance and Pantani, was inspiration for a little road fantasizing: Phil Ligget's voice in my head, as I rise out of the saddle look over at Lance, and "pilot" him up Mt Vontuex. Which, like all fantasies, would be the funniest moment in Tour history.
