Y'all stay safe during the storm, whether on the evacuation routes or hunkered down at home or with friends/relatives.

I will probably rolling out to my parents place in Cypress via bike probably after work tonight. I figure the bike is the perfect post hurricane transport no gas or roads needed:thumb:.

yup, y'all take care and don't mess with Ike, these things are not just big thunderstorms.
Last Hurricane I encountered up close and personal was Emily in 2005, I was in Cozumel when
she visited. She was not very nice.
If Ike lives up to expectations we (DFW area and east) could possibly see a CAT1 hurricane
up here (if he's strong 3 or moderate 4 when he makes landfall).

Be safe Texicans, hurricanes are tougher than us I hear, although my grandmother who lived most of her life in Corpus Christi would have argued that point with me.

As a Native Texan/Houstonian now living in GA. You guys get the H*** out of there. That's a bad ***** storm coming your way. According to the projected path, Houston/Galveston/Baytown & etc. will be on the nasty side.

Take care. Be safe.

Yep, I got spare tubes for the fat-tire Rivendell Canti-Rom, plus patches and a frame pump. I figure a fat-tire road/general-purpose bike to be a bit better than a knobby-tire MTB, though I have one of those, too.

Actually plans changed will be staying at my sisters near the greenway/west u area, I will be rolling with my 38's touring tires got lots of tubes and patches. I already have panniers packed and ready to roll. Though I don't get off work until late tonight. I thought about putting on my cross tires with knobbies but they offer no real flat protection unlike my touring tires.

I'm still hoping that with Ike's storm track going more to the east, we'll be able to get the Tour de Florence in (near Georgetown) on Saturday. Probably not, but who knows?

Well, poo; my agency decided to cancel days off, and increase the length of the shifts. I just got off work at 0600 this morning, and have to be back at 2 PM, supposedly to work until 0600, but likely to have to stay longer. The pooches will not appreciate being kenneled up (indoors) for 17 to 20+ hours. I may stash a couple of the smaller pooches at my in-law's place in my patrol area.

Y'all be safe, and have a happy hurricane! :)

Funny quote from the NY Times

Thousands fled the island earlier in the day in private cars or on government-chartered buses, but a few diehards insisted they would stay in their homes. One was Denise Scurry, a 46-year-old pool hall employee who was sitting on a milk crate Thursday afternoon in downtown Galveston near her two-story home, reading “Thugs and the Women Who Love Them” and sipping brandy.
“It ain’t going to be nothing but wind and rain,” she said. “Everybody’s all excited about nothing.”

Ya'll stay safe down south. Should be interesting up DFW way come tomorrow afternoon. I don't hold out much hope for the power at my apartment, seems to go out with anything stronger than a stiff breeze. Sent the wife to the store to stock up on a few things this morning.

Galveston looks to be grave peril. The storm surge may reach 20 feet, and then there are the waves riding on the storm surge.

Best wishes to the Bay area, indeed.

The wind is beginning to pick up, but no rain yet. I'm on the Eastern Corner of 610 on the Hardy toll road. All the bikes worth the steel they're made of are in the garage. Should be scary for a few hours, but after being in the eye of Wilma in Ft. Lauderdale, this will probably not be as bad. We had estimated 125mph winds then. So far they say 50-60mph sustained for Ike.,,,,BD

I also hear 20,000 residents stayed in Galveston. Best wishes to the die hards!:(

Well, here in Sugar Land we're finally seeing some strong wind. We haven't seen any rain at all yet. I actually went for a run this morning and a ride this afternoon. I wasn't sure how long it was going to be before I could get out on the road bike again. Riding a couple of laps around the neighborhood, no matter which direction I was going I couldn't get a tailwind. It was either serious crosswind or headwind. :notamused:
I think we'll be alright here.

Still just gusty here. I stepped out a little while ago and got hit with a few drops of rain, now it's dry again. I'm glad I taped the bedcover down on my truck. I don't feel like buying another overpriced piece of fiberglass like I did after Wilma.,,,,BD

Raining here, and very windy. No sustained winds, just sporadic gusts. Still have power and phone line. Amazingly enough, we even have satellite tv svc. still.(knock on wood!),,,,BD

2am, and we still have power and tv. I hear some strong gusts though, so it may not be too long until it happens. As it is, we seem to be the only house on the block with power, which is odd. We did get a new power hookup with the central air 4 years ago, so that may have something to to do with it. We also heard a transformer explode about an hour ago. So far not too bad, I'll keep my fingers crossed.,,,,BD

Yea, we're even expecting some power loss up Dallas way.

I would have thought the bad stuff would be hitting you guys by now. Glad it's still going well, and good luck over the next several hours.

4:37am EST: Bye, bye Galveston! Buckle your seatbelts, Houston. Here comes Daddy!

Yep - looks like the backside of Ike will hit Houston full-on. Unless Ike abruptly changes course (not bloody likely).

Well, it was a long night at work, and not easy to get home in the morning. Home, well, a mess, but it could have been worse. The big ash tree in the front yard is badly damaged, a crepe myrtle bush really chewed up one edge of the carport, and the side fences are history. Water seeped past one set of French doors, leaving a big puddle in the den. Power is out, of course, and who knows when it will be back up. I am working off a power supply gadget at the moment, but I can't justify using much juice, because there will be no easy way to charge the power pack. I will be scarce here on BF for a while. Y'all ride safe!

I think our friends to the South will be without power a day or two at the least.

So far it looks like it ended up being less than what was predicted. Let's hope it turns out that way once the winds die down and search and rescue can get out and do their job.

Well, going through even a Cat 2 Hurricane in the middle of the night is pretty unnerving. We woke up around 2:00am to crazy wind. My wife decided we should sleep in the closed in hallway, just in case a tornado formed. Needless to say, I didn't sleep much. The only damage we had was a fence fell down, but thankfully it was the one we wanted, as we wanted a reason to replace it.
But, I was pretty nervous the whole night, and the wind wasn't even as bad as predicted. Hope everyone else is okay.
