Foo - ??Destination Unknown??

Well I graduated from college in December and am ready to move somewhere. I got my degree in Political Science so I dont have a specific job I am looking for. So I have decided that I want to move somewhere where the riding is great and then find a job there. I am looking for you guys to give me suggestions on places to go, and why. I ride road, mtb, and am getting in to cross a little bit. I would like somewhere that is commuter friendly (if that place exists). I have had some spiritual callings to three places but have no idea why because I have never been to any of these places but they are Athens, GA; Telluride, CO; and Sedona, AZ. Anyways....give me advice.

If I had it to do all over again it would either be Boulder, CO or Crested Butte, CO.

Athens is a hip town, and it's getting more and more bike-friendly. I commute to class and back without any problems, and there are tons of nice rides in the surrounding country side (watch out for dogs, though; see my recent post about that particular problem). The downtown area has a bunch of bike racks for stashing your ride while you're catching some of the restaurants or a band (this town has perhaps the single greatest music scene in the country). A sizable number of the police here ride as well; you'll see them patrolling downtown on some very nice mountain bikes.

Check out BikeAthens (http://www.bikeathens.com) for more information and a list of local groups and rides. I've been on a number of their Courteous Mass rides, and it's always been a great experience.

As far as coming here with your education, you might consider grad school. I've known a couple of PolSci grad students here, and they seem happy with both classes and TA positions. You could certainly do worse than Athens.

I don't know how Athens comes up against your other towns, but I've lived here for five years now, and I really like it.


p.s. As far as bike shops go, there are three within a twenty-minute ride of my house. :)

Colorado, would be my choice since you didnt say anything about New Mexico...
Great mountains, great altitude, great weather in the summer and since you are into MTB the winters wont bother you...

Texas - K6III is absolutely right. Live in Europe and you'll never need a car. Excellent bike paths everywhere. Beautiful scenery. Magnificent history. I would recommend Europe to anyone who is just getting started out with their adult life.

Move to Rhode Island, you can mtb, and get connected with the Mafia, and maybe you can get free bikes from Joey "knuckles" Capone. ( Just an idea)

South Korea is beautiful...AND expensive! What a winning combo! I lived there for 1 year, taught English in Seoul at DanKook Univ, walked through riots, hiked mountains, drank soju 'til blindness, ate strange foods, and never owned a car. On the second day I was there...

You mean there are actually jobs out there for poli sci grads? Back in the day, it was either law school or, as it was in my case, returning to a lucrative career in post hole digging. Sometimes when I look at the long idle post hole digger in the garage, I think I may have made the wrong choice.

Santa Fe seemed nice to me for the very brief time I was there, but there's no ocean. PacNorWest and NorCal sometimes call out to me, though I don't know why...

Boulder CO, as do other Colorado Front Range towns like Ft. Collins, offers great bike commuting, road riding and of course mountain biking. Boulder has a pretty extensive network of in-town dedicated bike paths (the local lore claims that when it snows, the paths are plowed before the roads). It is nestled up against the front range of the rocky mountains, so you have good access to both road and mtb. It's what sold me on this place.

Athens is a great place to ride. Maybe because the Univ of Georgia is there? They have a couple of bike clubs. The Nitty Gritty Bike Band is one I'm familiar with.

Visit each and stay a while. You seem to be in a great situation to do so.

As for Athens, phoolish is dead on. Great cycling, sports, music, art, political, and academic scene. Easy access to Atlanta and the north Georgia mountains. Athens has a serious racing scene too with the Twilight Criterium and SEC bike racing.

I grew up in Flagstaff (near Sedona) and loved it there. You had endless mountain bike trails within a few miles in every direction. As far as road biking there is a little less there. As far as jobs the Flagstaff/Sedona area is kind of flat as far as good paying jobs go. "Poverty with a view" as my former boss put it. I ended up moving away because I couldn't support a family there, you may not have that problem though. Sedona has good mountain biking but I don't know about road biking. The local bike shop holds a century ride down there so there must be some roads to ride!

Austin of course! Austin is usually rated one of the top places to live for MTN biking. Lots of places to ride trail and road. remember Lance still lives here about half the time. Live in Austin and ride all year around. then take a trip to Colorado and Utah in the spring and fall to round it all out.
