HI,
As I ride more each day, I think hey I need this when Iam 20 miles down the road, SO I am listing all the junk I have velcro'd to my bike.
1. removable Wheel Fenders front and rear
2. Cell phone.
3. Water Bottle(( IRONMAN BLUE)) of course..
4 Hand Air pump sharing water bottles bolts.
5. Cell phone case with tire patches
6. Complete bike fold up tool set, with 3 portable plastic and steel centered tire irons.
7. Cat Eye PC.
8. Blinky lights front and rear.
9. Clip less pedals from that crankbrother.
Did I forget anything.
SO if you see me going down the road it may seem like I touring, but I am ready for that flat or a losse whirlymajig thingy.

I don't count the bolt-ons as things I carry, I consider them as
a part of the bike...blinkies, fenders, racks, etc.
Carry-ons are generaly stowed in my trunk rack which I move from
bike to bike and often include:
*Spare tube(s) of correct size (this changes from bike to bike and
requires some carefull attention)
*Nutrition
*Tire spoons (the hands aren't as good as they used to be)
*Pump
*Wallet (with identification and insurance card)
*Multi tool
*Park allen wrenches
*cell phone (for those big problems that I don't want to mess with
out on the road.....haven't used it yet.)
When commuting there is my knapsack filled with enough food for my
12.5 hr shift, dry clothes, rain gear, cold weather gear (Gloves, headband etc),
allen wrenches and multitool...but I don't bother with the flat repair stuff.
I haven't flatted commuting yet and if I do, it's only five miles each way. I just
pull out the cell phone to call in "late to work", or when going home I can walk
or call home for a ride.

Be glad you don't have a recumbent with a seat bag the size of a small suitcase. I have to go through it continuously to make sure I'm carrying a minimal load weighing less than the bike.
I think I carry a normal amount of stuff. I carry:
In my seat bag
a spare tube
a tube repair kit that is for a rare second flat
2 tire spoons
a few bandaids and a couple of aspirin
10 dollars
small mini tool
In Bento bag:
granola bar
spare blinkie
I don't really count the stuff fastened to the bike but here it is:
a cateye headlight that I take off when not commuting
a road morph g pump
cateye computer
incredibell
rear blinkie
I clip my cell phone to the strap on the side of my seat bag.

I carry the necessities.
In my tiny seat bag:
3 tire spoons
1 CO2 cartridge and tiny applicator-thingy
1 spare tube
patch kit
In my pockets:
Right -- Gu, small tube of lip balm, eye drops (to keep my contacts from feeling like potato chips)
Middle -- Kool Kovers, hand pump
Left -- Tyvek wallet w/cash, racing license, business cards; cell phone
Around my neck I wear a Road I.D., and of course I carry 2 water bottles.
I'd like to carry less but I don't know what I'd eliminate.

When I am riding in the country and/or riding more than 50 miles I have:
- two spare tubes
- patch kit
- tire boots
- spare spoke
- extra chain links (2)
- tire levers
- multi-tool
- pump
- 2 water bottles
- duct tape
- cell phone
- $ and ID
(edit: oops! forgot to add - on almost any long ride I expect to be scenic I carry a digital camera. I am currently thinking about my riding goals for 2009 and one of them is to TAKE MORE PICTURES on long rides.)
In town I carry less.

keys (if I drove to start)
racing liscense
In my pockets:
cell phone

Do your multi-tools have a chain tool? I carry a tiny Topeak chain tool. A few weeks ago, on a ride with about 10 people, a guy broke his chain, and I was the only one with a chain tool - and a multi-tool.
Tonight, a guy broke his chain, and I totally saved him with my chain tool.
The thing is tiny. Don't know why more people don't have them. Or even know how to use them. :(
Oh, the list:
Zip-loc baggie #1:
Chain tool
Multi-tool
Tube patches
Tire boot
Two plastic tire levers (you don't need 3)
Zip-loc baggie #2:
tube
Pockets:
Cleat covers (Keo carbon cleats)
Tiny pump
Packaged food (if needed) - Gu, bars, whatever
Banana (if needed)
Zip-loc baggie #3 - cell phone, money, id
I have blinkies in my handlebar ends, and have a saddle bag blinkie and another frame mounted blinkie that I use if there is fog or if I'm riding in the evening.

Oh man...
The absolute best thing that ever happened to me was the CF MOtobecane IF.
No way was I gonna load up a seat bag with 6 lbs of stuff and no way was that Performance Transit bag winding up on it.
The CF 'forced' me litterly to start paring down to the essentials.
Long rides (60-100 miles)out in the sticks..the folding tire comes with but other than that.
Either the CO + 2 spare cartridges, spare (new) tube and some patches. Tire levers and the 2 most often used allen wrenches.
The Cel only comes on the long (out in the sticks) ride. and then it's rubber banded to the handlebar and I carry a bar mounted plastic clip for the cue sheets on long rides.
The rear flasher comes with on all bikes but the front light has disappeared. I simply don't ride that often after dusk (try ,at all)
Time was when my 23 lb Paramount weighed in at 31 pounds with all but the kitchen sink aboard.
1. Spare tube
2. Small patch kit with 2 plastic tire levers
3. Topeak Road Morph Pump
4. Cell phone
5. 1 or 2 water bottles
6. Sometimes a gel/snack dependant on length of ride.
Lp
My "necessities" list includes enough to require leading a pack horse behind me. It's a constant battle to keep the list manageable to foul weather clothing, laptop, extra water, 2 camera and a camcorder, dual mounted camera ultrapods, and of course, the Cateye, headlight, handlebar bag for the Kryptonite bike lock.
3 teflon-over-steel tire levers (Continental tires on Campagnolo Omega rims = tight fit)
spare innertube
glueless patch kit
spoke wrench
Topeak, Cooter, or similar multitool
full-size frame fit pump (Zefal HP-X or Blackburn)
1 or 2 water bottles, depending on the bike
If I plan to stop, add a lock, backpack, etc.
In the (good/bad) old days, I used to carry a spare gearshift cable, a spare brake cable, and a few spare spokes, but today I rarely have any mechanical problems other than punctures, and even those are no longer very frequent.

This is almost exactly what I carry on my road bike, except the GU packs / Shot blocks. If it a longer than 30 mile ride I take either a cliff bar, a power bar, some fruit, or a combination of the three.
Oh and I add a drivers license, debit card, health insurance card, and maybe a $10 bill all in a little ziplock that Sidi cleat hardware came in.

The handlebar bag has the fingerless gloves, cycling glasses with changeable lenses, the arm warmers, the bus change, the mileage log, a pen, and a giveaway patch kit in it all the time. When I'm ready to ride, it gets the cell phone on weekdays, and on weekends it gets cell phone, prescription glasses, and camera.
The trunk always has a couple of bamboo-fabric towels, a small first-aid kit, benedryl caplets (since last Saturday when I was stung by a bee during my ride), some anti-itch cream (another souvenir of last week's bee sting adventure), and a couple of granola bars. On weekends, extra bottles of water are added.
In the pockets of the shorts I wear over my cycling shorts are wallet, regular carrying-around money (not to be confused with the bus fare money kept on the bike), lip gloss (Chapstick), car keys, and usually a pocket knife that's borderline concealed weapon.

Totally ride dependant. My minimum is:
Spare Tube
Patch kit
Allen wrenches
Tire levers
pump
Water bottle
Cell Phone
Garmin 305
Longer rides I may add:
Foldable tire
Additional Tube
Brake/shifter cable
Tire boot
more water bottles
Rain jacket
tights
jacket
food, the more the merrier I always say
Map
Sunglasses
Sun Block
Camera
I think thats about it, but my Carradice Bage has a huge capacity!
Add bug spray. In the warmer months I won't leave home without it. The skeeters won't bother you if you're moving, but if you stop to change a flat they'll eat you alive before you get back going again.

I have a large seat bag, in it are: chain tool, multi-tool(all popular allen sizes, straight and phillips screwdriver), one spare tube, patch kit, CO2 inflator with a couple spare cartridges, some duct tape wrapped around a piece of cardboard, tire levers, small cheap compass. I'll add my wallet and car keys to that if I'm riding somewhere that I have to transport the bike to. The cell phone is in a case which I will velcro to the handle bars. I have a rear blinky and a mount for an LED flashlight(150 Lumens) on the handlebar (on the road bike). Duct Tape has come in handy-once had a rider break a chain stay on a mtn bike-limped home by taping a small branch to the chain stay! Use the same bag on the mtn bike, just swap out the tube.

Always in the trunk bag -
Spare tube (or 2 tubes if the ride is in the sticks and more than 25 miles away from home)
tire levers
Standard you-glue-em patch kit
A self adhesive patch kit in case the glue in the standard you-glue-em kit dries out
Pair of latex gloves to keep my hands clean when changing tires.
7 piece Allen key set
Small needle nose pliers to pull flat causing glass or wires out of the tire.
Small double ended screwdriver with blade and phillips head
Chain tool
An energy bar or other munchies
Pencil and small noteook
Driver's license, insurance card, credit card, $50.
Cell phone
Glasses
Frequently in the trunk bag, a digital camera
Always on the bars, two 2.5 oz cans. One is a horn, the other is pepper spray.
Always on the frame, a Topeak Morph pump and 2 water bottles
If the ride is to an area I don't know well, a map and a compass
If the ride will continue after dark, head and tail lignts, and a reflective vest
A jacket or fleece if the wather looks bad.
Sometimes a pair of pants if I have to run errands and don't want to look like Peter Pan in somebody's store or office.
Saddle wedge, contents: multi tool, spare tube, tire levers, tire gauge.
Hand pump
Water bottle(insulated)
Cateye Vectra computer
In a fanny pack I keep another spare tube or 2, tire lever, camera, extra batteries.
Cell phone in my pocket just in case.
I usually go riding with my wife, and I carry almost everything for both of us on my trike (although she's starting to go faster than I can now - maybe it's time to split the load!). With all of the junk below added in, my trike tips the scales at just shy of 80 lbs.
In the bag:
2 regular spare tubes
1 thorn-proof spare tube
2 sets of metric hex keys
3 patch kits
multi-tool
wire cutters
pliers
3 plastic tire levers
1 roll of electrical tape
band aids
2 Ace bandages
2 rolls self-adhesive tape
gauze pads
ibuprofen
alcohol wipes
tube of antibiotic ointment
sunblock lotion
baby wipes
Epi-pen
contact lens solution
2 cable locks (one for my trike, one for my wife's)
gloves
windbreaker
4-6 granola bars
a dozen or more business cards from my LBS
wallet
keys
sunglasses
(Edit) Oops - forgot the dozen spare AAA batteries for the lights.
On the bike:
RoadMorph G pump
Headlight
Taillight
2 26-oz. water bottles
A small IncrediBell
2 mirrors
Cateye computer
My wife's trike has the same equipment on the bike, plus 1 20-oz water bottle, but doesn't have a bag on it - it's just under 40 lbs.

I carry as little as possible, and it varies depending on how far I plan to ride and where, if anywhere, I plan to stop. For a ride beyond the neighborhood when I don't plan to leave my bike unattended, I carry:
1. Pump
2. Water bottle(s)
3. Seat bag: cell phone; ID/credit card case; money clip with a few bucks; house key/car key; Allen wrench set; spare tube; tire levers; pair of food-handler gloves; and one paper "shop towel" cut into two strips.
My U-lock weighs 4 lbs. and my 6-foot cable-lock weighs another couple of pounds. I only take these when I know I'll need them.

I forgot...in addition to my wallet, keys, cell phone, and cable lock, I also usually (if I've remembered to charge its battery) take along a GPS receiver (a Garmin 201) that I use as a speedometer/odometer.
I figure that the wallet, cell phone, and lock will handle any problems I'll encounter without the necessity of carrying along a bike repair shop and a convenience store. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/deraltekluge/Avatars/whistling.gif

Oh gads - don't even ask. It's amazing how much junk can creep in when you're touring for extended periods of time. The one thing that my husband thinks is absolutely crazy, but I think is essential, is a couple pounds of beads. Yes, beads - I'm a bead artist and can't live without my pretties!!

This must be 50+. Nobody's mentioned a pistol yet. Generally by this time on a "What I carry thread" some gun nut extols the virtue of packing heat.
I'm still impressed by the huge list of stuff some people feel is necessary to carry on every ride. When I ride my fixed gear I don't even carry a pump or patch kit. Then again, I never ride it farther than about 20 or 25 miles. That'll still be a long walk if I ever get a flat tire.
Incidentlly, I'm typing this from home so obviously I've always found a way to get back.
This must be 50+. Nobody's mentioned a pistol yet.
Well actually, I plan on getting pepper spray. Not for animals but in case someone gives me trouble.
Sad that we even have to worry about that today....

Same here. There are many miles of dirt roads around here and I'm sure I could find some good offroad and fire road routes through the north Georgia mountains. I may snag a frame and take my time building it up.
Headlight, taillight, fenders, etc are built in to bike.

Be glad you don't have a recumbent with a seat bag the size of a small suitcase. I have to go through it continuously to make sure I'm carrying a minimal load weighing less than the bike.
I`we got two big "panniers" on my longtail. Went trough it two days age since the bike felt a bit heavy. Found two chains (brought for longer trip some time back, do not trust the chain), a copy of a viking axe, good quality, a 5m dogleash, dog harness, flashlight, some straps, dogshoes..
This in addition to the usual tools and spare tube. Must keep an eye on those bags in the future:D

I guess I'm a minimalist of sorts. Frame mounted hand pump, one water bottle cage and bottle, computer up front, and an under seat bag that holds: one tube, small patch kit, that crankbrothers tire lever thing, two regular park tire levers, three allen wrenches (one that has a phillips screwdriver on the other end). I also take my phone and wallet and never leave home without sunglasses and a hat.
