Went to the specialist today in St Louis. I have OCD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteochondritis_dissecans in my left ankle. Not the greatest news, but at least I know what the prolbem is. I'm schedule for surgery in the middle of November. No need to rush into it, doc said the damage is already done I can wait as long as its with in six months and I can stand the pain. I'm also out of the boot cast and into a ankle brace. Now I can work without dragging a 20# deadweight around. I can also resume biking! I thought I was going to go crazy, been a week off the Nomad and just hate having to drive the cager in this nice fall weather.
Anyways, they are going to go in with a scope and clear out the bone fagments and scar tissue around the ankle. I'm going to be off work and the bike for seven weeks! But I will have the time build up and a few bike building projects to keep me busy.
Well, I also got the Hardrocks today. Wow! I noticed the differance from pushing a 700cx38 slicks to a 26"x1.95" knobbie! I was given a set of slicks for them, but after a few blocks, I didn't care. The Hardrock is alot lighter and nimbler than my Hybrid. I was pulling the Young Prince and his tag a long and it still felt good. And did I metion it was with the SS Hardrock?!?!?! This thing is awesome. We rode three miles to the lake and let the YP and wife play on the playground while I took the neighborhood boys around the CX track (aka the walking trail!)! That was the fun! Now I know why grown men ride "dirt bikes"! The Hardrock allowed me to stand up and really mash the pedels (note to self, get some of those clips and shoes Jay talked about) hill hte steep hills and "kick it" around the tight turns. I'm glad I wore gloves. I almost missed my front suspension, but that can be added later when I find one cheap for sale. The boys could barely keep up. I had to wait for them a few times on the 4.25 mile trail. Bet they wished they had "real" bike know instead of those 20" toys for stunts!
The SS handled the hills and the track great. It was a pleasure not to worry about gear shifting. I just mashed or coasted! I see the red Hardrock getting a SS or maybe a flip flop hub build for this spring.
I didn't get to ride the red Hardrock mcuh. It was in great mechanical shape, just some more scratches and nicks in the paint then I would have liked. And the handle bars looked like they are the short messenger ones. But then I did get him down to $75 for it, so I'm happy. I have a set of handle bars, I just need a taller stem.
The Grey SS Hardrock (an Ultra) is older, but it was well taken care of. It going to need new cables ($20, LBS quote) and that is about it. The owner converted it to SS and I have the orginal gearing as well. He did a great job on it, better than my junker convertion. He also had a new Jamis SS Mtn Bike. It rode great also! I have a feeling the Oldest Princess is going to want one of those in a 29er version.
But, here I am after my CSX aventure, and I'm not even sucking in my gut!
