Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Any You Big Guys Ever Split A Hub????

I'm not sure but my hub may be splitting. Noticed what I thought was a scratch a few months ago. Seems to have extended in length, but not quite sure. Could be my imagination so I put a black dot on the end to see if it increases in length.

Anybody seen this?

Bummer! Built my own wheels. In the 15,000 miles, I've snapped a frame and now maybe the hubshell. But no spokes and still true as a good wife!:D

Looks like a fatigue crack to me in the hub body. Congrats, it looks **** you've worn out that hub,.

if you take a sharp knife and scrape away material on top of that mark you can see if it really is a crack or just a weird surface flaw.

Im not saying its impossible by any means but usually hub cracks are at the flange.

If it is a crack i would be kinda pumped, if the rims are still true and no broken spokes for 15,000 miles thats a sign your a pretty good wheelbuilder

Thanks, I'll try the knife trick!:thumb:........I'm really surprised with my 15,000 miles with no truing. Especially after I've paid 4 local high end roadie shops $100 for the build alone but none lasted more than 3k miles. One only lasted 40 miles and was a Deep V!:p

Thrashed the bottom bracket. But I do think this crank is near it's end. Figuring it's a Bontrager, I'm figuring it's no big deal.:p Next one will be Ultegra. I have one on my 98 Cannondale with no troubles. But I don't ride it as much. So hoping a better quality will make a difference.

BTW, the rear cassette fell to pieces when I removed it. The connecting pins were toast!:D Maybe I'll take up jogging! Shoes are much cheaper than component accumulation!:roflma2:

I don't know about shoes being cheaper. My student who runs says that his shoes only have a few hundred miles in them.

My 9 year old boy split a hub on his BMX race bike last year, very much repeated impact related. I wonder if your axle is bent, his was. I think that the bent axle on his caused the cone to sit at an angle so the load on the bearings was not distributed, it would have been all at the top.

I've never seen anybody crack a hub like that. Wow! I used to wear out the hub bearing races on mid-80s era bikes, but have not had a problem with that since I replaced them with the more durable hubs that they have made ever since. You may have to go with ultra-durable Ritchey hubs on your next wheel build?

Replace that hub with a power tap.

Oh darn, just lost some of my glory! I took a piece of really super fine sandpaper used for buffing scratches from autobodies. Used some polish and the paper/cloth and removed most of the SCRATCH! But I will keep an eye on it and I do have a super shiny spot on my hub!:p

Allow me to be smart here:) - I could not imagine forces that would make it crack that way. I saw few cracked hubs, but AFAIR it was always through the spoke hole.

I've seen interhole chunks break but not the section I've shown in the pics. That's why I axed!:

BTW, we did thrash the shell/body on our tandem rear wheel. Had to be replaced. My wife is really strong!:thumb:

Heck...... its even an Ultegra !!!! Never cranked one of those, rims, seats.... even a crank arm...... never a hub

Hub AND frame before spokes? Now that is a Clyde trait!
