General Cycling Discussion - useing bar ends as hoods

i recently purchased a fisher dual sport 229 and have been working on hand/arm comfort by switching various bar and stem combo's. its close now, but on todays ride i began to wonder if i might get more out of it if i had hoods to ride. has anyone here tried useing stubby bar ends as hoods on a flatbar?

I use long bar ends and even **** them in tape. Toolish perhaps, but my comfort is paramount.

I had my Trek 520 converted from drop bars to flat bars with medium-length bar ends. I wrapped (note spelling) the bar ends with a split innertube then covered that with electrical tape. Not pretty, but fairly comfortable. I have the bar ends pointing up slightly, with the curved ends pointing up and in.

i put the bar ends that came with the bike(cane creek ergos) back on and they do in fact work like hoods on a road bike. sorta. they attatch to the ends of the handlebars and that spreads my arms way out. what i had in mind when i started this post was to ask what you would think of putting bar ends more on the inside of the handlebar, say just past the shifting/ braking mechanisms. i am useing easton monkey riser bars and theres room up there for them. has anyone positioned them this way?

Try it out and let us know how it goes. I had the idea of doing the same at one point, but there's precious little room on my handlebars as it is.

I commute on a MTB with bar ends and I just wrap (!) my forefinger and thumb around the base, much like using the hoods on a drop bar (except the flat bars are generally wider) and ride like that on occasion. Therefore it doesn't matter if your bar ends are stubby or 10' long.

what i did was cut an inch off each end of the handelbar and put the cane creek bar ends on. i installed them so that they were almost horizontal, and it worked really well. i just finished a metric, which was a combination of dirt/gravel and fairly bad county roads, and have no hand buzz to report. not a trace all day!
