im currently hoarding some parts to build up a cross bike and im trying to figure out what to look for in a crankset/chainring combo just for the style of riding/racing as well as mud clearing-ability?
im thinking of running a sram s900 but what rings should i go for? or am i way off base

Consider the Sram S300 CX crank;

Sugino XD compact and maybe change the big ring? Sugino cranks are really nice. Otherwise, buy a Shimano crank.. even the Tiagra grade one is quite nice and as you pay more, you are paying for nicer chainrings. Since you will probably be swapping them, why bother?
