Can I change the shimano 105 crank (30/42/52) to a Shimano Deore LX (22/32/44) without any other modifications, or would I need to change the cassette too?

Thanks.

I think you'd need a new bottom bracket. Otherwise there's no need to switch the cassette unless you want different cogs.

If they are intended for the same amount of cog in the rear cog set I believe yes, the spacing is different for gear jumps as the spaces between cogs are smaller as the rear cog amount increases.
edit: I wrote this poorly, I have a headache so bad I can't really see out of one eye-
I was informed when wanting to upgrade 7-9 rear speed that the spaces between the front chain rings changes, not sure if this meant spacers or a new spider.
Come to think of it, I don't go that lbs 'cause of the lack of custom design implementation they would do.
Thier way or no.

Those two cranksets have different Q-factors. The MTB set is wider. Probably no big deal for you but I am very sensitive to q-factor and wide ones make my knees hurt.

Another possibility is to buy 48-38-26 rings for the 105 crank. In either case, check your seat tube and make sure the front derailleur can be slid down far enough to work with the smaller rings.
